Hail Mary? 2023 Camaro SS Rumored to Ditch LT1 for C8 Corvette’s LT2 V8

Switching from the LT1 to the LT2 in the 2023 Camaro sounds like a reasonable and potentially cost-saving move.

No matter how much power automakers stuff into a given model, we always want more, which is precisely why many of us mod everything we own. Regardless, when it comes to the most current Chevrolet Camaro SS, many people would say that the car’s 6.2-liter LT1 V8 – which produces a healthy 455 horsepower and 455 pound-feet of torque – is a good starting point for any modern-day muscle car. But at the same time, those folks will be happy to hear that the 2023 Camaro SS might be ditching its LT1 for the C8 Corvette‘s more powerful and modern LT2, which makes 495 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque in its top spec.

This rumor comes to us from YouTuber Lethal Garage, who notes that it would be a bit unusual for GM to give the less expensive 2023 Camaro the same exact output as the more exotic C8, even if it would presumably still be slower. However, it wouldn’t be the first time such a thing happened. “If you look at the C7 Stingray with the LT1, those cars had 460 horsepower, whereas the Camaro had 455, so GM can do something like that,” he says. “Detune the motor, or just say it has less power.”

The Camaro and Corvette have a history of sharing components, so this rumor isn’t terribly far-fetched, either. But such a change would represent a pretty large power increase from one model year to the next, more than the move from the Gen 5 Camaro to the Gen 6. Regardless, GM could easily just give the 2023 Camaro something like 470-480 horsepower and call it a day.

Obviously, this is just a rumor and should be taken with a grain of salt, as always. But in today’s world, where supply constraints are affecting the automotive industry more than most and with automakers like GM committing to all-electric vehicles in the near future, it makes sense for GM to streamline its V8 offerings.

Giving the Camaro even more power would also be a nice way to send its long-running muscle car out with a bang, as has been the rumor for years now, but for now, we’ll just have to keep our proverbial ears to the ground and wait to see if this change eventually becomes reality.
