Fourth generation Camaro SS looks and sounds stock, but it stil does fantastic burnouts with LS1 power.
This week’s Burnout Friday video comes to us from the YouTube channel of Andy Larson and it features a late fourth generation Chevrolet Camaro SS roasting the rear tires. This car appears to be stock in what we would call “daily driven condition”, but it still puts together a glorious smoke show.
Stock Burnouts and Donuts
A great many of the vehicles that we feature here on LS1Tech are heavily modified whether they are racing or doing burnouts, but this fourth generation Camaro looks and sounds like it is stock. It even has stock wheels complete with a missing wheel center, so we would guess that this car is packing the same LS1 power that it had when it rolled off of the Canadian assembly line nearly 20 years ago.
Based on the way that the burnout begins, coupled with the fact that the transmission never shifts, we would also guess that this Camaro SS is fitted with a manual transmission.
Slaying the Tires
The video begins with a few seconds of the fourth generation Camaro SS at rest, but the driver quickly brings up the engine speed, dumps the clutch, gets the rear wheels spinning and hits the brakes – keeping the Chevy muscle car in place while the rear tires spin. Within a few seconds of the start of the burnout, smoke begins to build around the rear end, but the driver holds the car there for a good 25 seconds.
After the excellent stationary burnout, the driver lets the Camaro roll forward, whipping the rear end around as he keeps the tires spinning hard and the LS1 engine screaming. The cameraman has a hard time keeping the car in frame during the donuts, but that doesn’t take away from the display of tire slaying put on by this LS1-powered Camaro SS.
"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.
"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.
"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.
