600 HP Junkyard 4.8 Iron Block 240sx Destroys Hoonigan’s Burnyard

By -

There isn’t another V8 that sounds quite like a junkyard LS V8, when bouncing off the rev limiter.

There is always two sides to a story. This story is about putting V8’s into an old Nissan 240sx. One side argues that putting a V8 into a 240 is disrespectful, takes away from the heritage, makes the car lose its charm, etc. The other side argues that a V8 takes care of the lack of power and reliability issues that stock or Nissan-based motors like the KA24DE, SR20DET and RB-based engines prove to have in the 240 chassis. What side are we on? You best believe we like a good V8-powered 240.

Thankfully, the crazy kids at Hoonigan always have something up there sleeve. A recent guest is suit-sporting Spike Chen, a seasoned veteran of drifting who has competed in Formula D in the Pro-Am class and has had no shortage of crazy builds. This includes the world’s first twin supercharged LS1-powered MK IV Supra, which by the sounds of it, was one hell of a vehicle. However, today he brought a different toy to Hoonigan’s Burnyard at Irwindale Speedway. As you might have guessed, its a V8-powered 240, but, this isn’t just any V8. This 240 is powered by a 4.8L iron block truck motor.

According to Chen, this build is very home-brew, which means that everything and anything that has been done to the car, including the motor build, was done in his home garage. So fret not weekend warriors, if there is a will, there is a way. The crank in the 4.8 has been replaced with an LS1 crank, as well as LS1 rods and pistons. However, the real bread and butter of this build is the Edelbrock E-Force supercharger placed on top of that junkyard truck motor. Thanks to the added boost, this V8 makes somewhere in the range of 600 HP.

To help this 240 slide is a unconventional setup of Megan Racing front coilovers with KW V2 coilovers in the rear. If you haven’t understood this yet, this build follows the strict mantra of “if it works, it works”. One of the most interesting things we saw on this build was the help of a make-shift water injection system, which supplies water to the tires to cool them down in between laps to increase tire life.

If you had any doubt that this truck motor literally shreds tire like no other and is dead reliable, please watch the drift insanity towards the end of that video. We aren’t quite sure we have ever heard a rev limiter sound like an AK-47 until now. If that’s what it means to have a V8 in a 240, we hope to see plenty more.
