Z06 dumps oil, things go haywire, everything is…fine?

Things can go really wrong anywhere you race, but a big slide during a street race tends to produce a big crash. Somehow, this street-racing incident in Texas ends with neither a crumpled Corvette Z06 nor Shelby GT500. Given the level of devastation apparent in the nitrous-fed Z06’s engine and the speed at which both cars were probably traveling, the racers in this StreetScienceTX video should be thanking their lucky Texas stars for the result they had.

The C6 Z06 runs a 100-shot of nitrous on the 7.0-liter LS7 engine with 740 horsepower, according. That LS7 carries a bit more than just stock parts, as evidenced by the lumpy, lopy idle in the video and an assortment of bolt-on parts under the hood. The Shelby GT500 carries TX2017 stickers so it gets around a bit and Street Science says it makes 680 horsepower.

Everything looks like a fairly normal highway roll-race for most of the pull. The Mustang pulls on the Corvette and then slows down after winning. This is where things go haywire. The Corvette slides, presumably on its own oil after windowing the block or bursting an oil line. A ball of flame suggests it was probably the former. As the Corvette slides, it PIT maneuvers the Shelby. From there, both cars slide wildly across the divided highway. They come to rest on opposite shoulders without, it appears, hitting anything else.

The Corvette does end its wild ride perched on the edge of a deep median, however, so things could have been much worse. The biggest problems for them obviously entail the now-busted engine, probably some tattered fiberglass, and possibly a lasting skidmark inside the car. This was a lucky escape and probably a reminder for both that the racetrack is safer for racing, if for no other reason than you’re in a controlled environment with safety workers.
