A group of brazen thieves stole a group of Camaro SS and ZL1s right from the source before leading police on a Fast & Furious style chase.

Automotive theft is on the rise, and as a result, thieves are getting more and more brazen in their attempts to make off with pricey new vehicles. Case in point – a rash of thefts from General Motors’ Lansing plant in recent months, including a recent one that seems like something straight out of a Fast & Furious flick.

WXYZ News in Detroit was on-hand to cover this wild story, which involved the theft of a total of five Chevy Camaros – including two ZL1 models – which ended in a pretty crazy police chase.

After the thieves made off with each Camaro, Michigan State Police posted on Twitter that they were on I-96 looking for the suspects. It apparently didn’t take long to find them, as it was after midnight, though the criminals chose to flee rather than pull over for the pursuing officers. The chase wound up hitting speeds of over 100 miles-per-hour while police used drones, a helicopter, and spike strips to bring it to a halt after it encompassed three counties.

It took one heck of an effort to stop the speedy Camaros, including at least eight different police departments. Some of the cars were stopped by spike strips, while others simply lost control and crashed during the chase. The aftermath is pretty rough to look at, but it seems that no one got hurt, at least, which is a small miracle considering the calamity that occurred here.

A grand total of nine people were captured and arrested, some after attempting to flee, and all face multiple charges including receiving and concealing a stolen vehicle, as well as fleeing and eluding police.

The cars are estimated to have been worth around $375,000 in total, a hefty sum that will also likely work against those folks in court. It’s a truly stunning series of events, but in this day and age, wholly unsurprising, too.
