C/D: 2014 Chevrolet SS vs 2013 Dodge Charger SRT8 392
I know, I know, it’s something of an apple to oranges comparison. A brand new base model 2014 Chevy SS vs a late specialty model 2013 Dodge Charger SRT8 392.
With the Chevy’s as tested price coming in at almost $10,000 less than the Charger, the difference was made in a couple different ways: Larger engine with bigger output on the Charger (470hp/470lb tq) vs the Chevy’s “lacking” (415hp/415lb tq) slightly bigger brakes and better braking results for Dodge, as well as slightly faster straightline and top speed numbers (1/4 mile smashed in 12.6 sec @ 114 vs Chevy’s 12.9 sec @ 111 mph).
End of the day, the Charger’s big bruiser like qualities held it back in the comparo with the Chevy ultimately taking the gold home, along with high praises:
“The gifted offspring of a BMW M5 and a Chevy Camaro SS.”
Those are some significant words. In this comparison, the Chevy manages to roll through with its victory with better driving dynamics, a superior transmission, and more sophisticated handling. Visit Car & Driver to read more.
