It’s a strong statement made by the good people at Jalopnik, and their argument is sound. With the Chevrolet SS’s recent introduction to showroom floors and a $43,475 base price tag, one does wonder exactly what happened to the {affordable + practical + tail-happy + quick} formula that the outgoing Pontiac G8 held.

There’s definitely more to the story than that. We can’t overlook the extra $15,000 on the sticker price compared to the G8 GT, but we need to consider this as an “apple to oranges” comparison, as one commenter points out. The G8 came in a GXP trim as well. That model was closer to the 400 HP benchmark that the newer generation LS engines provided.

The lesson here: Rather than making an apples to oranges comparison – we need to recognize that Chevy as a brand is no longer offering the base model.

As nice as the SS is (I actually love it)—is it really worth that much more than picking yourself up a used CTS-V? It’s a valid question to ask oneself.
