Every Z06 LT4 Engine Will Now Be Built by a Human in Bowling Green

The C7 Corvette Z06 is a special car. The performance for the price point is simply unmatched, and much of that is owed to its brand new engine.  At the heart of General Motors most powerful car ever is the LT4 supercharged 6.2-liter V8 that puts out 650 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque. It’s no wonder demand for the car, in spite of its overheating issues, is off the charts and actually overloading GM with orders.

Because demand was so high, General Motors actually shifted some of the production to its Tonawanda Powertrain Facility in New York to help Bowling Green’s Performance Build Center out a bit. That’s fine and all, but Kai Spande, the new Bowling Green plant manager much preferred to have all the production in one plant under his supervision. And he got his wish. As of May 1, every single LT4 engine is being assembled not only in Bowling Green, but by the work one single technician’s pair of human hands. Peace out, robots.

The move was part of Spande’s push to add a second shift to the BG plant. Spande took $75,000 of a recent $44 million investment to make it all happen. According to Corvette Blogger, the PBC is now making 45 LT4 V8s per day, which equals about 2.5 per worker. Sounds fun, right? Well, if you’re that into your cars and would like to get a first-hand experience building the engine, you can actually do so for another $5,000 with the purchase of your Z06. Decision time …
