First Corvette Z06’s LT4 Motor Blows Up!

2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06

Well, we could chock it up to the sheer number of new LT4 powered Z06’s on the road already, but we’re already bringing you the first catastrophic failure.

A few days ago, one of our own Corvette Forum members had a bit of an ordeal. With only 891 miles on the odometer, the engine went caput.

Here are his words exactly,” I was out putting some more miles on the car to get ready for my track event at Road Atlanta Jan 10 and 11. While making a pull from 35 mph I accelerated and shifted short of redline and boom. Car began knocking. I pulled over and popped hood. Could hear a loud knock coming from # 6 cylinder area along with a serious grinding metal on metal sound coming from the supercharger area.”

That is not good.

The break in period for the new LT4 powered Z06 is supposedly 500 miles, and the car isn’t to be tracked until it reaches at least 1500 miles. But seeing as this car blew at 900 miles, that is not something Chevy wants, or in fact needs right now seeing as they are still dealing with all the recalls.

The motor is being sent back to GM to be completely disassembled and looked over to see what caused the brand new LT4 to blow its top. Hopefully GM can find a flaw just in this specific engine, and not the overall line.
