How VAD Design Created the World’s Only ‘Street-Legal’ LS BMW Z4

Weighing a fraction of a street car and wielding 485 horsepower, this LS3 swapped Z4 is the UK’s only street-legal GT3 car, and the world’s only GM powered one at that.
A UK-based design house took a rare BMW Z4, gave it the full GT3 treatment with dry carbon fiber, and stuffed a mighty LS3 V8 under the hood for a one-of-a-kind, road-legal track weapon.
For the enthusiasts who believe everything is better with an LS, Vogue Auto Design (VAD Design UK) has delivered a true masterpiece. This incredible one-of-one build is a street-legal BMW Z4 (E89) that has undergone a full GT3 transformation, complete with a genuine, dry carbon fiber wide body kit. What makes this build truly exceptional for the LS community is the powerhouse lurking beneath the vented hood–a tuned Gen IV LS3.

According to Lee Hodgkins from Vogue Auto Design, this vehicle is the UK’s only street-legal GT3 car, and “the world’s only GM powered one at that.” Originally built as a promotional vehicle for VAD Design, it retains full UK MOT and road tax, meaning this track monster can legally cruise on public roads.

Heart of the Beast: LS3 Power
After ditching the factory powerplant, VAD entrusted the LS3 to the skilled hands at Dynotorque in Tyseley, Birmingham. The result is a slightly-tuned LS3 V8 pushing a potent 485 horsepower. This robust American engine is paired with an equally capable Tremec six-speed gearbox, replacing the original BMW unit—a classic LS swap move that prioritizes durability and driver engagement.
Engine management is handled by an standalone Emerald ECU, breathing out through a custom stainless twin pipe exhaust system. The combination ensures that the car not only looks the part of a race machine but has the undeniable soundtrack and accessible power of a potent GM V8.

Genuine GT3 Aero & Stance
The exterior is where the true GT3 ethos shines. This isn’t a fiberglass replica; the car sports a full, genuine dry carbon fiber BMW Motorsport GT3 aero kit. Finished in Alpine White with a stealthy matte black wrap, the aero package is comprehensive. It includes a full-carbon front bumper, massive front splitter, vented bonnet, side skirts, rear quarter panels, rear bumper, and a functioning rear diffuser.
Capping off the aggressive look is the dual-blade rear wing assembly, secured with quick-release pins—pure race car flair. This extensive carbon-fiber work dramatically reduces weight and provides the necessary downforce for serious driving.
“We made the wing, but the uprights are genuine BMW Motorsport,” said Hodgkins. “We made the blades that sit up top, and while this car is a Gen 1 GT3, this has the Gen 2 rear wing setup.”
Custom Running Gear & Interior
To handle the increase in power and the vastly wider track, the suspension was completely overhauled. The Z4 rides on custom-manufactured Bilstein Coilover Suspension, specifically tailored for this one-off build and fully adjustable front and rear.
Filling out those massive carbon-fiber arches are striking three-piece forged custom wheels, finished in a matt and gloss black color way. The stance is aggressive: 10.5 x 19 in the front and a steamroller-wide 13 x 19 in the rear, wrapped in Michelin rubber (265/35r19 and 325/30r19, respectively). Inside, the race focus continues with Sparco race seats and a carbon-look steering wheel, ensuring the driver is firmly planted and ready for high-performance driving.
