1967 Camaro SS

It is still a long way from being finished but this LT4-swapped 1967 Camaro SS shows its potential on the first highway shakedown drive.

Building a Camaro restomod is not an easy process. The end result can be extremely rewarding but the path to get there is often long, arduous, and expensive. That is why when you are in the middle of a build like that you should take the time to enjoy the milestone victories along the way. And that is what we are seeing here. This is a LT4-swapped 1967 Camaro SS that still has a way to go before it can be declared fully finished. But it just celebrated a major milestone. That milestone was the very first highway drive with the new powerplant.

A video was recently posted on the goonzquad YouTube channel of this impressive build and all the work that has been done so far. You can sense the excitement of the builders as this 1967 Camaro SS reaches highway speeds for the first time. While the shakedown drive should be considered a success there are clearly several significant issues that still need to be worked out. But that is par for the course when you are building a restomod like this. And even though the car is not perfect you can see the potential in this build and how incredible it will be when it is all said and done.

LT4

LT4

The LT4 powerplant debuted in the 2015 Corvette Z06. It is rated at 650 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque. At the time this was the most powerful production car engine ever built by General Motors. It puts out more than double the horsepower that a stock 1967 Camaro SS would. So, this engine swap should provide plenty of get up and go in this application. Especially once this thing is tuned properly. At the time of this video the engine was still not running 100 percent and would bog down at times. Once the tune is done and everything is dialed in this car is going to scream.

Upgrades

The LT4 is the star of the show but this is a full restomod not just an engine swap. Some of the stuff is already done such as a sweet air conditioning system. It is maybe not as exciting as the engine swap but being comfortable makes a car like this a lot more enjoyable. And of course, there are other mechanical upgrades such as the brakes, suspension and lighting. But there is still more work to do. The paint is rough and needs a respray. Although it looks great in the video. But there are some safety concerns as well. The car needs seatbelts and a brake booster to help slow this beast down. You gotta have the whoa to match the go in a car like this.

Ambitious Project

Creating a LT4-swapped 1967 Camaro SS restomod is a large undertaking but at the end you have a one of one creation that you can be proud of. Especially if you do a lot of the work yourself. This video offers some great insight into the highs and lows of a project like this. They are finally close to the finish line, and the excitement is there. But there is also a lot to still overcome and the journey even to this point was not simple. If you are thinking about a project like this, or you have done one in the past the video below is well worth watching. We can’t wait to see the fully finished product.
