Project Ron Burgundy: The L33 on Carbage
It’s an engine that isn’t exactly a unicorn but sure isn’t easy to find. However, Project Ron Burgundy will get the L33 as it’s heart transplant. Why is the L33 a good idea, maybe even over the LQ4? Carbage gives us the brief in this video.
The L33 is a great engine, like much of the GM LS-architecture V8s. However, what makes it better over the regular 5.3-liter is that this version is aluminum. Unlike the LM4, though, this engine features higher compression, flat top LR4 pistons and a different camshaft for 310-horsepower out of the gate.
When compared to the LQ4, that means about ten additional horsepower and far less weight than the 6.0-liter iron block. The L33 is a win as far as we’re concerned.
It does come with the drawback of being available in only twenty-five-percent of Silverados and Sierras and only in those trucks with four-wheel-drive. That’s where Texas Speed and Performance saves the day with their rear-sump cast aluminum oil pan.
