Chevy has a chance to tighten its grip on the NASCAR landscape with the potential entry of Honda to the Cup Series.

For decades, Chevrolet has stood alone at the top of the NASCAR Cup Series. It embodies American automotive excellence and competitive spirit on racetracks across the nation. As fans of the bowtie brand, we’ve celebrated countless victories, championships, and moments of glory, across Chevrolet’s storied legacy in stock car racing.

However, recent rumors suggest Chevrolet’s NASCAR dominance could face its toughest threat in decades in the near future— Honda.

This prospect brings with it a mix of anticipation and apprehension, as we consider what Honda’s arrival might mean for Chevrolet and the future of NASCAR.

Just as a reminder; Chevy won its third consecutive manufacturer’s title last season. It also had a string of 15 straight from 2003-2015. Altogether, Chevrolet has stolen away 42 of the 65 such titles since its first crown in 1958. Dominance doesn’t begin to describe the success Chevy has enjoyed.

From the Land of the Rising Sun

Chevy’s potential challenger doesn’t fit the traditional NASCAR mold—that is to say, it’s not an American brand. But Chevy best not let that lull them into a false sense of security.

Honda’s reputation in global motorsports is undeniable. With a storied history in Formula One, IndyCar, and various other racing disciplines, Honda’s technological prowess and competitive drive are well-documented.

Honda, who brings considerable engine-building experience from Motorcross and WRC to Le Mans and Formula One, won’t have any issues putting a quality rig on the track.

Honda might not do so well, but it certainly won’t be for lack of a good car.

When Might it Happen?

Rumors of these talks were recently brought to light by Jordan Bianchi of The Athletic on his podcast, The Teardown.

Bianchi shed light on the intricate process required for a new manufacturer to enter NASCAR, highlighting that such a move involves detailed submissions for approval, extensive testing, and more.

He also indicated that, as far as he knows, this process has not yet officially started for Honda, suggesting that if they were to join, it would not happen before the 2026 season.

Potential Talent Theft

One of Chevrolet’s more immediate concerns is the possibility of Honda attracting top-tier driving talent to its ranks.

NASCAR’s competitive landscape is heavily influenced by the caliber of its drivers, and Honda’s entry could shift the balance, luring away established stars and promising newcomers alike.

The allure of joining a globally recognized brand with a fresh perspective on NASCAR could prove tempting for drivers seeking new challenges or the chance to be part of a historic entry into the series.

For Chevrolet, this means not only facing Honda on the track but also potentially battling it in the backrooms for driver signings and team partnerships.

A Call to Arms for Chevrolet

Facing the potential Honda threat requires Chevrolet and its teams to redouble their efforts in innovation, development, and talent management.

However, as great as Honda might be in motorsports, Chevrolet won’t simply allow the new kid to walk in and steal its lunch money.

If anything, Toyota and Ford are in greater immediate danger of losing drivers or teams to the new blood. Hendrick certainly won’t entertain any thoughts of switching to Honda.

Ultimately, this is an opportunity for Chevrolet to tighten its grip on NASCAR in the short term.

What’s Next for NASCAR & Chevrolet?

The rumors of Honda’s potential entry into NASCAR have sent ripples through the community and stirring excitement.

The prospect of facing a new competitor with Honda’s resources and racing pedigree is a daunting one, particularly regarding the potential reshuffling of driving talent.

However, it also serves as a possibility for Chevrolet to bolster its position, innovate, and push its tradition of excellence to new heights in the face of new challenges.

But for now, it’s a wait-and-see game.
