1FASTBIRD- I live in South City. But like i said my parents would be paying for any tranny work. Not me. Im paying for the real mods. I just tell them that my cars tranny is going out and my pops will give me $500.. So sooner or later ima do a converter but like i said i need driveability.. Cause i drive about 10-25 miles local driving a day.

Not rying to be mean or anything, but you sound young. The won't do anything for you if you can't use it. You could have 500hp and not be able to use it and get smoled by somebody in a saturn.

Well like i said im 19 and work about 30 hours a week and go to college 12 units so i dont have alot of time on my hands. I just want to know whats the difference between getting a stall before cam. I want to get cam before stall cause my parents will pay for the stall.. Like i said i might sound young but i do have alot on my hands. I did buy the car myself and pay with it cash up front. every mod i have done was paid by me but when i tell my parents something wrong with the car theyll pay to fix it.

Like what was stated earlier The cam and torque convertor plays in sequence. You would not put a high performance motor on an old high milage transmission would you. Of course not! you would not get the performance out of the motor because of the transmission. If you want to get 400 rwhp by putting a cam in. You would have to get a rather large cam but you will not get the performance out of the cam that you are looking for by just getting the cam. You need a rather large stall convertor to get the performance out of the cam. And you must not of been in a car with a large cam. The driveablility SUCKS. My suggestion is to get mommy and daddy to get the convertor. Tell them that your convertor is shot. Have them pay for the stall then get the cam. If you just get a large cam with the stock torque convertor, you will need to raise your idle quite a bite to keep the car running. And it will probably be touchy as hell, meaning if you hit the gas to rev it up the car will probably die.

But hell if you don't want to take the advise from everyone on this board then don't ask and learn from your own mistakes. Everyone here is JUST GIVING YOU ADVISE FROM WHAT WE LEARNED.

i agree 100% with importpatrolws6, if you get a cam you gotta have a stall. That factory stall wont work well with a bigger cam. I drive my car daily and i dont even notice my stall. Gas mileage is the same as factory with my 4.10s and vig3000. But actually,I know you dont really care too much about what your running at the track. As you said, you're more of a street racer anyway. So i guess it doesnt really matter. If you gotta have a cam, then get one. Itll sound great anyway. Just pray you dont run into somebody whom isnt terrifed by just the sound of a cam. I know im not.

Ill let you have an idea how a big cam kills drivability. My 70 LS6 chevelle had the factory cam which was just a lil bigger than most cams guys mod these ls1 with. And with 4.10s and 4000stall it got 4mpg!4 mpg! And i drove it everyday! I had to fill it up every other day! With premium only! Now thats having a LOT on you to pay the note, insurance, and the GD gas bill! But i just had to have a chevelle. I was 17 at the time. Im only 21 now though, but ive had a lot of things happen in my life to make me grow up rather quickly. Dont take your parents for granite!

Just for future reference "granite" is a type of stone, usually used for flooring or counter tops, just so you know.

lol you're worried about the street manners while daily driving the car yet you want a cam? Sorry bud but a good quality converter will be just as streetable if not MORE streetable than a cam. Like already stated you'll eventually need the converter ANYWAY plus a possible rear gear change AND a tune. A cam will suck up more gas than a converter will.

Just food for thought.

What do you consider "real mods"? You sound like a typical ricer. You just want to be able to say I have 400 HP and have nobody race you. That is stupid, whats the point in the hp if you arent using it. And without the stall and gears that 400hp will be not useable. You may peak 400 hp, but I bet the rest of the rpm range will suck ***. I would love for you to get the cam only and run your mouth like"I got 400 HP so I am fast" and then get your *** smoked by a stock M6 LS1. Maybe you should go trade your car in for a civic with 30 v tech stickers all over it.

I have never had a big stall in a car and was unsure at first if I should do it. After adding LT headers, offroad Y, dyno tune etc it really didn't bring my times down much..13.2-3's to 13.1's and a lucky 13.0. Put a Fuddle 3400 2.1 str stall in and first time at track pulled a 12.861 and 1.77's 60 foot on Nittos with a easy 2,000 rpm launch. Temp outside was around 85 and DA was in the 4000 feet area, so there are better times to be had. My Z28 is also my daily driver. total cost was $350 for converter and $300 for install and included a tranny cooler. It's all in the setup, you could add things all day to your car, but everything needs to work together.

My suggestion, for a good stall that will drop you .5 in the 1/4 and still have good driveablity is the TCI Super Street Fighter 3500
