I assume you are losing the 4 wheel drive, correct? The Subaru rear should be stout enough to handle about 400hp. Should be a great project.
The chassis is light and strong. Fitting the motor in is going to be challenging. Good luck!

Don't understand your amusement. Is it because you don't think the WRX rally designed chassis is light (3025lbs w/4wd mechanicals) and strong and can handle 400hp...
Is it because you don't think it will fit.......
Or are you sniffing nitrous....

alright.. heres some engine bay pics... as soon as the motor gets here im gonna hoist int down in there to prove everyone wrong...as far as the tranny goes its goin to be RWD and a t-56 will be humping the back of the block..doin a single turbo t-78 with a few pounds till it breaks, then i'll build with 383 stroker kit 8.5:1 compression pistons and a lot more PSI.. and yes i spanked that mustangs *** repeatedly....

You'll need it
You'll need it if you don't want to get spanked all the time by all the V8 Miatas even, by the wimpy Ford 5.0 V8 Miatas.
Havin' ultimate fun witha an LS1!!!!!!!!!!
PAYBACK, for all the past track days, including Laguna seca when squirrels in WRX STIs preyed on us in our little 4 cyclinder Miatas!
Revenge is a dish best served COLD!

pics......
Thanks for the engine bay pics. Just by looking at the pics, I think it will fit. It fits in a Miata bay which is alot tighter. I really like the idea of this swap because it is unique. Don't let the naysayers bother you, it's your car if they don't like it, they don't have to lookk at it. Anyway, I wish you the best of luck on this Subaru LS1!

I think it's a great swap, and I had a WRX. I know what you mean about getting abuse form the Subie folks. I get the same crap from the BMW group. I had my car at an auto show and two basic comments:
"It's a sin he got rid of the legendary M30 motor"
"Nothing like the sound of an american v-8"
I can't wait till I take the car to the NJBMWCCA track day at Lime Rock. I'm sure I'll get a lot of cold shoulders.
Again I think the advantage the WRX has over the other conversions such as the Miata and RX* is the strength of the chassis/body. It was design to take a beating in WRC so I think it will have minimal, if any, chassis flex which equates to better handling. The only thing that concerns me from looking at the engine bay is the steering shaft. As you are losing the front diff anyway you might want to consider a rack and pinion from a e21 or e30 BMW, the shaft is over more to the driver's side and your steering column is way over to that side anyway so I think it will be an easy swap. The e30 rack has two meaty mounting holes, you'd just have to weld two tabs on the cross member and bolt it in. You can make the headers fit in just about anywhere but the way it's positioned now it may interfere with the block.
What oil pan are you considering? It looks like you could do a front or a rear sump. I rear sump would be better but you may have to cut the firewall some. How about a dry sump! Lots of $$ but that would give you a lot more freedom on engine placement.
Keep us up to date! Very cool.

Great swap idea, I've been trying to talk my cousin in to this on his WRX for a year. It's going to fly! I can't wait to see pics.
Redmist,
Do you have pics of the BMW rack? Is it power and what is the ratio?
