Default Laying the Radiator Flat?

Is there anything wrong with doing that? Im extrememly tight on the front of my thirdgen with the intercooler and this radiator. The radiator itself is a fluidyne from a cup car and its about 3 times the size of a stock radiator. I think the measurements are 22X31X4. its got an oil cooler built in. If I relocatate the fill/overflow/vent higher than the engine I should be able to get all the air out right?

BTW this for an Tubo LT1 in a thirdgen. Thanks!

it would not be as efficient as standing it up because not as much air will get to it.

+1 It would defeat the benefits gained by a larger surface area for heat exchange provided by the Cup radiator. or in english the air will not be able to carry off any of the heat that is in the radiator fins.

Are you looking for possible solutions?

Well its odviously going to have multiple fans on it so I hardly think air flow would be a problem.as it is if I was standing it up the intercooler would be blocking most of the air... I was mainly concerned about air getting trapped in it.. heres a pic of a flat radiator on a badass TT vette. I was thinking along those same lines.

you will be just fine with the intercooler in front of the rad. just get a better water pump and bigger rad if you are worried.

Many, MANY imports, especially drifters (don't ask me why a guy with a name like mine knows this) run setups like this. It's especially common on the RX7s. They call them V-mount setups, which isn't quite what you're describing, but it's close and I'd recommend it if you can fabricate it. Here's a pic. http://www.nengun.com/image/catalogu...r_radiator.jpg

Search RX7club.com, lots of info. Also, it's mostly the drifters doing it, so look into it around those sections. Basically, the radiator is on the bottom, slanted just like the regular 4th gen setup. The air from that goes into the engine bay and out the bottom. Then, the intercooler is mounted vertically over the radiator and they install some sort of heat-extracting vents on the hood for the air to escape from that. The setups are really efficient -- they have to be. Not a lot of air getting into your cooling system if you're driving sideways instead of forwards . Also, only some of them use fans. At speed, the extractor vents work pretty well and I think thats why.

I know it's not quite what you meant, but I hope you find it helpful.

you, will need a quite a bit of room in the front to do a v mount set up. where is your turbo going to be ? in frond of the engine beside the crank pulley ? if yes forget about the v mount.

also if you really don't want to place the intercooler in front of the rad, just buy an air to water intercooler and place it anywhere you want.

Well I made come progress tonight. I think I figured out how to stand it up, its at about the same angle as a fourth gen radiator and ive got the intercooler stacked infront of it... with a pusher on the intercooler and two pullers on the radiators I think it should work well.

Thanks for the help! that V setup is pretty sick!
