Default Advice on direction re: new motor

On the eve of ordering a cam, I decided to check compression all around. Three cylinders down around 100psi-- imagining bad rings or worse. I knew she was blowing a little oil, but she does not smoke. So, thinking about enjoying her for a while as I plan/build/order the new motor. She is a 2001 Z28 M6, weekend toy.

Please sound off with ideas and any experiences in this department. Could get a refurb and start from there, could go crate (if $ will allow- worked over LS2, LS3), rebuild, pull one from a wreck and rebuild, etc...

With any luck maybe I can make something out of this bad news...thinking she may need to become a real beast now. As for the damaged goods LS1 between the fenders now, may go on the shelf and wait for future project.

I am hoping for some new ideas. Thanks, guys.

Budget? No hard number at this point in the game. Really, final numbers will be determined by what I can get, for what amount, within reason. I know I'm not giving you much to go on...but if I could hear a sounding-off of what's out there, I could go from there.

Who is running 400+ cu in and what power are you putting down? for what level investment? I have researched cams, heads, but have no idea what is involved in an all in motor build/ purchase...

Check with sponsors they have anywhere from stock up to big builds.Another thing is if money is a little on the slow side is get a built short block so you have a good base and then add on until you swap the whole thing over.GM will sell complete motor or salvage yard but then you may not be any better than you are now.As long as you don't need it quick the world of possiblities is wide open.

lq9 heads, forged pistons and rods, stock crank, 8.5:1 CR, and big turbo. will be pretty good budget build.

it will be around 10000-15000 dollars to get it done properly. all the part costs add up pretty quickly. trust me, i know.

Check GMHTP for the last couple of months. The 376/480 crate (LS3 with hotcam) is the way to go if you're gonna put any miles on it. 430/430 with great driveability and a warranty, for about $6gs if you shop it (plus labor and incidentals of course). Can't beat it. If you want to go big, the odd size L92 based motors (402-416s) are some NICE deals. You could also find a used, low mileage LS2 (with 24x) and slap some nicer heads on it while you do the swap. Tons of options.

I agree with blanco, you need to pick a budget. Even if you phase it, you need a marker for each phase.
