Default Need octane? At a moments notice?

Wheel to Wheel has completed one of it's first online technical documents and the topic is "Octane on Demand". We will run this type of fuel system on our Project Super Nova which employs twin Rotrex superchargers......

Interesting and expensive but thank you for sharing. By the way VP 103 unleaded (99 motor octane) has a specific gravity of .743 which is 6.19 pounds a gallon. 7 pounds per gallon is high for gas and might cause you to underestimate fuel delivery requirements slightly. Is it necessary at all to impedance match the 16 injectors on the BS3?

its all in the ECU..

... and you thought tuning a normal car was difficult.. ha!

but on a more serious note, its just like the vehicles that use dual injectors already.. only one of the injectors has a different fuel fed to it. And the benefits of using dual injectors usually lies in the accuracy in which you can control fuel flow.

What I would really like to be able to do is specify when staged injectors fire in relation to the cylinder events. I would like the primary injectors to be timed so that the fuel delivery reaches the chamber at the very end of valve overlap for mileage and emmision purposes at cruise rpm. This is no problem I know. But...I would like to be able to time the secondary injectors independantly so that their event is advanced for higher rpm operation. Anyone know of an ecu with that capability? I can set up my XFI with selectable tunes that have different timing. It will drive 16 injectors, but it won't do staged injection with automatic duty cycle control and the tuneup is not selectable on the fly.

edit: I see after spending some time looking at the BS3 manual that the injector phasing is adjustable by rpm. Pretty cool. The XFI has a single fixed setting. I may be in the market for a BS3.

I will ask Kurt to provide the more technical answers for you. Give us a call when you need a BS3. We can offer the best deal on one usually.

has anyone thought of running a setup like this but with propane gas??

i know there is a some supra guy running gas.

i think it is higher octane and also it would cool the intake down lots (right?) and i dont think its that exspencive!

Chris.

but its also close to uninjectable because the high pressures used in propane would destroy your average injector.

Wheel to Wheel. I think a worthwhile project would be to develop a controller which will incorporate displacement on demand, and octane on demand. That would be very interesting to see where the efficiency curves cross in relation to each unique system. Imagine running down the highway using 90hp on 4 cylinders then mashing the gas and seeing 1000 boosted hp come to life instantaniously. I'm sure it can be done but other engine parameters like th camshaft will be affected. Very interesting article
