Question:

Does the NASCAR rule book define a required bore x stroke or is that variable by the engine builder as long as the 8 cylinder engine is not larger than the Max allowable engine size? Can the Bore x Stroke change depending on the track? It may not be much but, on some tracks they may want a little shorter or longer stroke.

I've been searching the web for the exact rules. I even tried NASCAR.com and found nothing...searched the store for the rule book even.

They have a Max bore size but I don't even know what the current one is right now? I think it is 4.185 or so? They didn't want to give the Dodge or the other bigger bore spacing guys an advantage.

Thats is a very good point. I thought NASCAR started out taking cars that could be bought stock, with options, from the factory. Isn't that what the S stands for?

It seems like these days it is racing like the GT3 class and some road racing cup classes that allow people to buy 'race' like cars. But then again that is comparing apples to oranges.

There are some pics at www.wegnerautomotive.com of 1 version of the R07 I'm think they are close to what is used in the Cup series

+1 on that. However, I will give them this, they're making money by the truckload. It may not have any merit with the purist crowd anymore, but it's a huge moneymaker and they'd be stupid to mess with it too much. I'd love to see a race league similar to the old NASCAR show up, ya know, with cars that actually share something with the one sitting in the showroom at the dealer. I might actually watch that...

I wouldn't exactly call this engine newly patented. Didn't GM debut a concept engine exactly like you describe called the XV8 almost the better part of a decade ago?

The patents, (US 6,505,589, 6,505,591 and 6,505,592 among others) were actually issued early in 2003. In the world of R&D, that isn't that long ago. I'm not familiar with the XV8, but you may be right about some of the concepts.

Unless they moved the pictures, the engines shown on wegner's page are of LS engines. Wegner makes the front cover for the distributor and the intakes.

The "Nascar Spec" engine they show there is for the Nascar touring series.

No R07 shown there.

I auctually got so see the r07 at the race track this weekend in Atlanta it was being ran in the 33 cup car simply as an R&D Atlanta is one of the hardest tracks on engines... The motor is approved for use but nobody wants to take the chance on the new package...It's deffently a mix between a Ford Dodge and Toyota... front distributer(sp)... exhaust ports.. stuff like that but from what I have seen the Toyota is a nicer...
