starter button instead of key?

starter button instead of key? I saw something at the Chicago Auto Show that I really liked. The Mercedes S500 has a starter button on the shifter. I'm just wondering what it would take to wire something up inside an F-Body to do the same. So you'd basically turn the key to the on position then hit a button to start. My boss reminded me that I probably wouldn't want the button on the shifter. I hate to think what would happen if I kicked the starter on when the engine's spinning above 6000rpm.

First you'd have to take apart the ignition in the steering column..
Thats easily done..
Park the car somewhere in chicago for a few hours.
Your ignition will be taken care of by the local 'mechanic's for free!
After you watch em finish their work, Yell "thank you!" ..they may run away, but at least that part will be finished.

I think a push button starter just left of the stereo or in the center console would be cool!!

I'll be wiring that so I can have the antenna down while I'm listening to CDs. There's enough room on the faceplate for another switch or a button. That may be an option for the starter.

Saw the button you set up on the Sounddomain site. Looks good! That's exactly where I was going to put mine. Where did you tap into the ignition wires? What color was the wire for the starter?

Re: starter button instead of key? Honestly I have no clue, I knew I wasn't going to be able to hook it up myself so I let one of my dads electrical freinds do it for me. It took him maybe 30min. If that. But instructions were pretty straight forward and easy to read. I think you can get it from NOPI.com

Re: starter button instead of key? I have always wanted to do a push button starter for my car. The only problem is that you have to use a key to get the acc. power on then you can hit the button. I would like to set mine up with an aircraft cover switch to turn the power on then have button to start it. Anyone done this on a LS1 based car?

Guys, for some reason I have the JC Whitney Rice Boy Cotologue...dont ask why, and in it they have a kit that can either replace youre cigarette lighter, or you can drill a custom hole for it. Re: starter button instead of key? Push button starter reminds me of my first car accident. When I was five years old, my father had a '37 Chevy or Studebaker with a push button starter. One day I was playing around in the car, and the key was on, when I pushed the button. The car was in gear, the engine started, and we went through the garage door. I thought it was fun but needless to say, my father didn't. <img src="gr_grin.gif" border="0"> <img src="gr_grin.gif" border="0"> <img src="gr_grin.gif" border="0">

Re: starter button instead of key? Im in the process of doing this to my '92 camry. So far it hasnt been too hard, its just been so cold that its hard to work on it for very long. I have found the swithches i need, but am still trying to find the right relays. I suppose i dont need to use them, but i am trying to incorporate LEDs to signify which systems are hot (accessories/run/start). I hope to find them tomorrow and have it completed. The hardest part was trying to figure out the wiring from the ignition with out much previous info.

Re: starter button instead of key? I got a blue one from IGNITED in my WS6. I had my buddy wire it up but it didnt take him that long to get it completed.
I can either use that or just start it as normal. It is kid of a novelty thing...

I just installed one under my hood as a "bump" switch to adjust valves.
You need a pushbutton switch that is rated at least 20 or so amps that can handle 12volts. I got one from Jegs.
Drop your underdash. From the ignition cylinder you will see a group of heavier gauge wiring.
The starter wire is Yellow. The 12v wire is Red.
All you need to do is wire one end of the switch to each wire. So when you press the switch, 12v is sent to the starter wire cranking the car over.
You WILL need to have your key in the run position. TO power up ignition/acc and for the vats system.
Years of installing remote starts pays off <img src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" border="0">

Re: starter button instead of key? The power antenna button is a success! I used a foglight switch instead of a traction control switch.
I at first thought I'd have to run the 12V source wire through the switch. I had cut it and turned the radio on to test. Problem was it stayed up with the radio off and the wires apart. Put them together and the antenna went down. I secured them back together and went to work on the remote turn-on wire.
This one worked. Now I just had to find which tines on the foglight switch to connect them to. For anyone considering doing this mod, there are a set of three and a set of two. Use the set of two. The 3 are for the lights in the switch, one for the foglight pattern, one for the amber "on" light and one for ground I'm guessing. I'll wire these later on.
I used snap connectors on everything and it feels secure. In order to use these though, you have to cut away the plastic that would hold the wiring harness in there.
I used some adhesive to hold the switch in the faceplate (from 'vert F-bodies) I bought. It's a snug fit but it doesn't snap in there like the 'vert switch does. I'm just waiting for that adhesive to dry and then I'll go back down and put everything back together. I have about a foot of slack so I can remove the console without pulling anything loose.
Once I get a starter button from Summit I can get to work on that.
