Default Whistler problem?

Anybody have a problem with the original reflective paint peeling off with the tape when doing the whistler mod?

Small patches of mine started coming off when removing the tape just wondering if anyone had this problem and had an easy fix?

what type of masking tape did you use? I used the blue stuff, but apparently theres a better one than that. you probably used stuff that was too sticky. Its also probable that your headlights were just old, and the paint was brittle from baking in the sun.

EDIT: if you buy new ones let me know, i might want to buy your headlights off you.

Ya I had my reflective chrome peel off when I took off the tape! I was chapped!!

I then tried to fix it from some "Chrome" spray paint from a local hardware store. However, there is no good chrome spray paint out there...except for this one that I just ordered a week ago called Killer Chrome Spray Paint. Supposedly it is the only stuff that will work, and I guess it has actual chrome flakes in it. I was thinking of doing write up if it works good.

p.s.: its a bit pricey.

I had a few little pieces come off too. I used the blue tape. Should have stuck it on my jeans a few times to make it less sticky. Now that they are on i dont even notice it. Sometimes i wonder if its the "whistler mod" that keeps the OEM headlight prices up Seems like you cant touch a used set in good condition for under $100

Yeah if it works out a write up would be great.

i used some 3m painters tape with medium adhesion. i also cut out an oval piece of paper to put around the light sockets so as little tape as possible was making contact with the back chrome. maybe that's why i was lucky

when i did the whistler mod, i was afraid of this happening to me. what i did was stuck the tape that was going to touch the chrome part of the headlight to my jeans a time or 2, so it would take some adhesion out of the tape. it worked like a charm when i unmasked them

When using th etape make sure you use the green automotive tape and take it off right after it isnt tacky anymore......you wont have a problem at all. Ive done like 5 sets and turns out perfect

As far as paint....use the small cans at walmart...."Plati-coat" or however you spell it. Roughin the area to be painted with steel wool. Thats it.
