Re: Dashplates are now available!
Hello all,
here's a question:
I would like to order a HP specific plate for my car after I get it dyno'ed in a couple weeks (after some mods).
Now, should I have the HP number on the plate be the number the dyno shows (at the rear wheels), or should I convert it to HP at the flywheel? (I have an auto, so the RWHP should be 18-20 % less than the HP at the flywheel ~ I think~).
What do you guys think? - All opinions will be considered.
Thanks in advance,
-Bradster

That's the direction I was leaning towards, XstaZ I'll go with the flywheel numbers converted from the RWHP numbers
-Bradster
P.S.: Is the conversion factor the same for the Torque number as the HP number? Or is there any conversion number at all for torque at the flywheel as compared to torque at the rear wheels?

Re: Dashplates are now available!
I like it, i am going on the dyno Wed for a retune.I want fwhp.Wouldnt 20% be to much? Seems as though it would be a fixed amount of power loss. Adding more hp at the wheels shouldnt make the drivetrain suck up more power, it should be the same loss no matter how much hp?

Re: Dashplates are now available!
From what I understand about it (and I could be wrong about this), a typical HP loss for an automatic equipped car is 18-20% from the HP made at the flywheel. For Manual cars the HP loss is typically 15-18 % (I think). This would give you a formula that looks like this:
RWHP= Flywheel HP x .80 (for an automatic)
So from that formula, you take your RWHP reading from a dyno run and divide by .80 (for a 20% drivetrain loss if you have an auto) to get the HP made at the flywheel.
So if your car dyno'd 320 HP at the rear wheels, then the HP at the flywheel would be 320 divided by .80 = 400 HP . I could be way off about this, but that is how I understood it to work.
Again, anybody know of a conversion formula for TORQUE from the flywheel to the rear wheels (if there is one)? Or is it the same as the HP conversion factor? Is it depedent on stall speed / STR ratio of theTC ?

If you made 400fwhp and had a 15% drive train loss then you would loose 15rwhp per every 100fwhp.. So you would loose 60hp (4 x 15) So 340rwhp would equate to 400fwhp.. Its late and I cant make sense of the needed formula.. for an M6 340 x 1.18 yields ~400 .. but that dosent make sense to me.. I DO KNOW that 340 rwhp is 400fwhp..
Math wizzes?
Torque is calculated the same way.. oh and the standard numbers everyone uses is 20% for an A4 and 15% for an M6.. although ive heard 18% for an A4 used quite often.. mostly due to the fact that modern automatic transmissions are more efficent these days..
Currently I would get a plate that says 391hp and 400tq -- I will probley get one that says 415hp and 410tq for when I get my cam
I like the results or your formula better though

Re: Dashplates are now available!
Dude, we're both right - I used the conversion factor for automatics (20%) in my example and you used the conversion feactor for manual trannys (15%). We just used two different ways to resolve the same equation.

So i guess that is just for cars with an aftermarket lid and catback?

There is an easy order for the just the basic numbers, but down on the lower right hand corner you can order it with ANY numbers you like, just be honest.
So, "IF" your SS has 435 HP and 410 TQ you can get that, just fill out the right blanks.

Re: Dashplates are now available!
I have a 99 and from the looks of where the plaque goes is right where the ASR button is, or will this fit there even with the ASR? I also think I am going to wait until the heads & cam go on the car and do a custom plate after dyno.
