Default How to remove an E brake handle?

I want to put a new handle on, since I have scraped mine up from removing the the console several times.

Can you get them rewrapped or does anyone make a billet handle?

Or maybe I will have to look into the billet handle idea and design one.

I seem to be the only one to have marked up my e brake handle?

Pull it up and you will see a hole on the side. I think its got a rivet in there that needs to be drilled out and it will just slide off. Some older ones had a screw but I think all LS1 models had a rivet.

I had to replace mine in a 97' Camaro, it seemed like it wasn't removable and I ended up ordering a new ebrake assembly from ebay.

Correct. It is a PITA to get it off, and still look nice . . .

Yeah I knew they were riveted on, if you find an easy way to replace it or design something new, let us know.

I drilled the rivet out on mine.

Id guess you could use a screw or another rivet to put it back.

Thanks guys.

I will drill it out, and tap the hole to put a little button head to replace the rivet.

I will also look at it to see if I can design a reasonable billet handle.

What's the best replacement once you drill the rivet out?

redline goods e-brake handle cover. It literally just slides over the existing handle. If you ever need to remove the console you can just slide the cover off to avoid scratching it.

Bring this back up after years.
Any solution to make the E- brake handle look better? Any aftermarket stock looking handles or can a upholstery shop rewrap it?

Leather wrapping my entire interior, and along the way decided to do the e-brake handle the mildly harder way, by drilling out this rivet.

I was able to lift the metal rod off the paw, but i did manage to bend it straight a bit while taking it out, and remove the handle. The accidental bending, made the re-install a bit of a head scratcher. More on that in a bit.

Started peeling the old leather, leatherette, vinyl or whatever it is, off.

used some 80 grit sand paper and patience to get the old glue off

Used Weldwood upholstery adhesive on the handle and the redline leather. Trimmed the leather as necessary, around the button whole (until it slid in and out freely), and the trimmed the base until it looked right to my eye.

I drilled out, and tapped the whole for a 10-32 button button cap bolt (t15 torx bit), that i bought over at Lowes.

Now back to the e brake button and rod. When i tried to reinstall it, the rod would not engage the paw, it would try and slide off and eject the button, spring and all.

So, i bent the rod down, and now it stays on the paw. Note, that you can't install the bolt to hold the handle on until you have the e brake release rod installed (you can't slip the rod past the bolt threads)

(for the record, the button in this pic - it's upside down. I thought it unscrewed, and have it rotated the wrong way. Before re-installing i rotated the button to the correct position.)

Re-engaging the rod on to the paw involved reinserting the button into the handle, flipping the paw down, and engaging the rod on to the paw using a flat head screw driver.

Now i can install the bolt
