Default Ratchet Shifter for A4

Has anybody ever seen a ratchet shifter on an A4 F-Body? Kinda like the ones made by Hurst. Theres one where you actually have to pull it up to get it from park to reverse, then down and back for neutral, and one more pull for Drive.
Is this installation possible for a 2001 Z28?
Does anybody have pics of the installation?

Thanks.

I don't think they make them for 4l60Es... could be mistaken though

No one makes a true ratchet shifter for the 4L60E. A few years ago I looked into getting a ratchet shifter for my 93Z28. I contacted B&M to see if they had one. When I spoke to someone in the tech dept. I was told that they did make 1, identical to the "hammer" that is available for the 3rd gen cars. But that was it. They said that it would have been to confusing for the "average" person to install and if it was not done properly it would severly damage the transmision.

Hard to explain if you've never seen one...its a shifter that does not have a button...there are ones that have levers i guess...there are other ones that you actually have no buttons..you have to pull them up and back to shift from park, then push it down etc....its one of those shifters where if you dont know how to use it, you will never get the car out of gear...

Larry Carr installed one into his 98SS back in early 1999 but has since sold the car.

He has a Megashifter in there and had to widen the slot in the console.

You also have to mess with some of the wiring but nothing crazy.

I actually bought one and was going to put it in but changed my mind and sold it last month.

There are people on this board that have ratchet shifters. I have seen 2 pics of cars with them. One of the cars has a 6 speed console and the other has a modified A4 console. I think I have pics of both somewhere. If you would like to see them send me an email and I'll get some to ya(if I can find em).

Could someone email me pics also....cobrakillerta@aol.com
How would this work in our cars/ with our trannys?
Would it work good w/ a converter? (say a vig3200)
I'm REALLY interested in this!

I have a B&M Hammer in my 98. Pictures here. I'd like to do the console again, but it's a project on the back burner. The megashifter will also work. I think the hurst ProMatic2, Quarter Stick and Dual gate would work too. I have thought about changing to a ProMatic, b/c I think I could make it work with a full stock console, but....
Basically, a shifter for a 700R4 will work, but no one makes a direct fit for our consoles.

Nice pics Chris, did you need to fab up a custom plate for the shifter to sit on?

I would have done one by now if I could manually shift my car but I can only wind out shifts I cannot short shift.

The only qaurter stick i see is for 3 speed transmissions. I would really like to get the hurst Qaurter Stick but I want the Pistol grp type. I just didn't see any for a 4 speed tranny. I am also interested in the B&M Pro Stick. i was really hoping that someone would finally put a ratchet on an A4.

P.S. What was the hardest part of the instalation?? What needed to be modified??

I have the Hurst Quarter Stick with an MBA billet **** with a tail. It shortened the throw even more and its awesome. I've only done a prototype fit and it isn't going to work very well on an a4. I have an M6 console now and I've only done a test fit but with a little modification to the shift boot the shifter is going to fit fine. I'll snap some pics when I get my interior back in. Waiting to have my car repainted now since the roll cage install and addition of a new hood and spoiler.

I mentioned this because someone said something about the Quarter Stick farther up in the post. It isn't a rachet shifter....just thought I might need to add that.

Guys, lets get as many people as possible to show support on this post and I will post on ls1.com, then send it to B&M to show the desire for it. I know just a few hundred wont make a difference, but, it might spark some interest in their R&R dept.

Me too!!! I would definitly buy a B&M custom fit shifter for my car. I hate the stock handle. Had thought about trying to make one my self. Probably still will unless someone makes one within the next 6 months.(Going to re do trans and add TQ then.)
