If you'll prep the tire properly, sling shouldn't be a problem.
You need to completely remove previous dressing, with degreaser or a good tire cleaner... Also, heating up the tire before/during application makes it much easier...

I'm surprised you were the first to mention sling. I find it to be a much worse problem than getting it on the rim or paint when applying it. I don't like finding it all over the quarters and fenders after the first drive. Here in windy west Texas, it's not worth using anything greasy anyways, it collects dirt FAST.

X2! Hot shine aerosol spray is the best I have found. I love it. The shine is bad ***, it doesn't run and it lasts a very long time.
I find that the auto stores sell it for $7.50 - $8.50 per can. BUT I have found several walmarts that sell it for $5.50 per can, check there first.

Meguirs Hot Shine aresol can. and i have a piece of carboard cut out so it covers my wheel and just spray the tire. ive been way to pissed cause of the many times ive spent hours polishing my rims then the damn hot shine gets on my rim lol
