the Tamiya red IS model paint.
I masked off the black and then just shot it with the Tamiya red. NO CLEAR. It makes the paint look like **** after. Just 2 coats of red. I'm well over a year and no signs of fade. And the amber is as dark as the rest. The whole tail light is one shade of red.

I've cleared both VHT and the Tamiya translucent paint, with no issues. both look great. But as Sommer said, it is not exactly necessary.
I always use dupli-color's Auto clear top coat, and i've had no problems with it. Different paints may not be compatible, so where the dupli-color worked good as my top coat, other clears may not work: rustoleum, krylon, etc...

To those of you that sprayed the entire lense with the red Tamiya translucent paint: Did it make the tail/brake portion of the assembly darker? I don't want to lose the brightness of any of my lights that other drivers will see. I'm going to sand mine down and redo them this way. I've gotten very tired of niteshade/blacked out tail lights.
Thanks for making this thread. Lots of good ideas, and I've been wondering how to do this.

you're gonna love it. I'm trying to restore my mom's 78 Z28, and her lights were EXTREMELY faded. so since i still had some of the Tamiya paint i decided to do them as well. I also repainted the center black section of the lights, and recleared the reverse section.
They now look brand spankin new.. But i did switch them up and covered the amber as well. But i'm probably going to redo them again and leave the amber, since i kinda want a factory look. I'm going to be ordering a couple of tamiya's yellow/orange translucent colors to see how close i can get to the original amber color.
