Default GM sail panel bubbling??? wtf

okay, so i painted my car a couple weeks ago, and today was the first day that i had it out in some good sun. it was in the upper 80's today. so i go out and me and my bro are looking at the sail panel and its freakn bubbling and some of the bubbles popped. kinda piisssed now cuz we primed and bocked the sail panel to cause it had a wierd kinda wave to it factor and i hated it, now looks like their back, im hoping the bubbles go back down when the car cools, but why's it do this, gm use bad fiberglass in the sailpanels??

This is a very common problem, mostly on black sail panels. Dark colors hold more heat and the glue gm used to attach the sail panels is what causes the problem. If you do a search there is alot of info on here. The only way to keep it from coming back is to replace the sail panel and reglue it.

In short, you'll have to remove that panel and adhesive and replace in order to get rid of problem. Trust me I read all the above when I bought my car and found this.

I took a sawzall to the roof of a wrecked car to get a new panel for my car. It's still sitting in my back yard waiting to be cut up and separated from the sheet metal. No way I'm paying GM $1k+ to fix their own stupid mistake.

How do you plan on getting that panel off the donor roof without breaking it?

getting one off of a car in one piece is a PIA. I'm going to cut all the sheet metal out from under it except for 1 layer and then I'll take a torch to the bottom of it to soften up the urethane.

Gotcha. Let us know how that goes when you do it. I might be in the same boat sometime soon.

A friend of mine took his car to GM and done it for free. It's a recall. But you might hav to wait a few weeks to get your car back or hopefully they can get it done sooner. Just find the recall stuff and print it out. Go up their and exain why it's important to you and be nice and all that jazz. Like I said, he got his done for free bc of the fact. I believe his name on here is crimson_tide or something along te lines. Can't rember for sure but it's a red z28

It is NOT a recall. A technical service bulletin was issued, but that was it. A technical service bulletin basically just says, "we effed this up, here is how you need to fix it." Some dealers were nice enough to repair it, the vast majority would not. Now that these cars have been out of production for 8 years I doubt there's more than 1 or 2 dealers (if any) in the entire country who would even consider it. I asked 4 or 5 in my area and they all said absolutely no way, not even if you came in 5 years ago.

One of the biggest problems now is finding the replacement part (from what I was told by the dealer) I was at the dealership a couple years ago with some warranty work on the truck and ask about this problem. I was told to call back with my VIN and they would look into it. Believe it or not I was called the next day and was told to get the car to the dealer ASAP. They found a roof panel and would fix it. At that time my car was 9 years old (60K miles) and I am the original owner. Picked it up two days later. I had heard that it was hard to get it fixed if the car was more than 5 years old. Not sure how or why the stars lined up for me, but I took it. Good Luck

I may stop in at my dealer and see what they say. You don't know if you don't ask.

I have a '98 Z, the car has rarely been garaged for most (if not all) of it's life, and I don't have ANY issues with bubbling (knock on wood). I guess I'm one of the lucky ones...
