New car smell. Can it really be reproduced?
I understand that it is the smell of glues, carpets and other parts and chemicals that combine to provide the scent. It seems like you can walk into any auto parts store, grocery store, gas station, WalMart or even Best Buy and find a "new car smell" air freshener. Every single one that I have smelt would give me a new car smell, just not a new car that I would want!
Is there actually a gel, a spray, or anything that actually accomplishes this? My car is almost exactly 14 years old (built in late September of '97 as a '98). It is in great condition and I would love to surprise a person or two by it having the genuine smell of a new car to go along with the condition.
Any suggestions?

Well your other thread mentioned you wanted a "new car smell" that smelt like "leather." That thread was full of products that would achieve this.
If your biggest worry is getting the "perfect" new car smell, you are one lucky F-Body owner.

Thats the thing. I'm getting new EVERYTHING. From the suede headliner, the Camaro steering wheel, the new dashboard, new carpet, vinyl wrapping all of my interior pieces to laying dynamat on the entire floor, double inside the doors and any other place I could add deadening, its all new.
And thanks to my wife, I am one damned lucky FBody owner. She supports me on this 100%. ****, I just ordered a rear diffuser valance from 6LE and all she wanted to know how to find the best place to paint it! And we've been together for 10 years. Thats 2 years longer than the car (she stayed with me through the '96 v6 hehe).
So yeah, one of my worries is getting the car to smell just right. Don't hear any of that as bragging on the car, hear it as bragging on the wife! She asked if I wanted a 2010 Camaro. I test drove it and hated it. I thought my car felt big. That thing feels like it is as heavy as my mom's DTS; so my wife said take the upgrade money and build yourself a "2011 version of a 1998 Trans Am." It has been fun rebuilding a car that was in good shape to begin with!

Damn nice wife! Try steam cleaning everything in the car, you would be suprised. I smoke in my daily and did it a couple weeks ago and the wife said it was like new( she doesn't smoke). Maybe push everything out of the a/c and get a fresh new charge. Don't do the visors cardboard will bleed, needless to say I got a new visor cd holder LOL! If its in the garage keep the windows. My 2000 SS has 15,000 miles on it and has that smell, better than my wifes 2009 acura.

All the stuff your doing to your car will produce a new car smell naturally .....especially if your doing headliner( I know your doing that) and new carpet( dont know if your doing that ) . I attend alot of hot rod trade shows , and in all these classics that have new interiors, they all smell like brand new cars inside .

I used to get that "new car scent" in a spray bottle. It smelled nothing like a new car; it actually reminded me of that "chlorine swimming pool" smell, but in a good/clean/fresh way. Then they changed the formula and now their new car scent smells like a rental car that somebody smoked in, it's AWFUL.
I have never smelled a "new car" scent that resembles anything close to the aroma of a new car. I don't think you can get that smell unless you replace most of your interior, so it sounds like you're in good shape.
Agreed

Edit:
Honestly, I already have all of the stuff - with the exception of a few mechanical parts. Now it's just a matter of finding the time to tackle the project.
