My problem with the red, is that it doesnt tie in well with the rest of the interior, grey and red just arent the same as black and red to me anyways. i think a silver, or more like a gunmetal might look better. When hes done with the rest of the interior the red might work well, hard to say, but ebrake cover, and armrest, and possible door arm rests, seat recovering, all with red double stich might help it tie in better. And why didnt you paint the ash tray?

check out the epoxy rattle can stuff, it says its for appliances (fridges, ovens, etc) and it works GREAT! it doesnt scratch off, if prepped well, has high heat tolerance (ive used it on my rims too, calipers are next) and coats well. i have a couple threads on it, search "epoxy"
