Default speedometer bezel install

I took my speedometer bezel off to change out the foglight switch in my trans am and while it was off decided to do some interior painting. The speedo bezel didnt come out easy- so now when i try to put it back in, i cant seem to without scuffing the paint all up. Its mainly the tilt lever in the way. To the guys who have done this-- Is there something im missing, a trick to getting this thing back in without scraping it all up??

I think it's supposed to unscrew. I had to hold the steering wheel down with my knee and hold that tilt lever back just to get enough room. And it still barely fit.

I thought it was supposed to unscrew, I just couldn't budge it. Guess Il have to try a pair is pliers on it without scraping it up. O well. Thanks

On the backside, on the bottom, there are 3 screw like thingies. I took those off before putting it back on, then with it popped in, I just screwd them back on. Was waayyy simpler to install without jacking up the paint.

If the paint has set long enough, you could try 1-2 layers of painters tape to protect those areas from scuffing.

Lower your steering wheel all the way down. Lower the bezel with the left corner down at about 45 degrees. Use your chin to hold the steering wheel down, hold the bezel with right hand and use left hand to pull tilt lever. Set bezel loosely in place, release tilt lever keeping the steering wheel down. Adjust the placement of bezel so posts fit into guide holes and clips line up with their holes and push bezel back into place. I've done it a dozen times and haven't messed up any paint this way.

make it easier if you unbolt the steering column and drop it down, just wondering?
