It's a great compound but dusts up A LOT, on a black T/A you'll want to use it with a foam wool pad followed by some 205 on a polishing pad.

I haven't seen the 205 in my area. I was gonna hit it with the 105 and then follow up with Zaino Z5 and Z2

The 105 works great, but it does dust a lot. There is actually a foam/wool hybrid pad out there. The 105 is abraisive so I would follow with the 205. You can get it online or even Ebay. I used to sell a lot of it on Ebay. Once the paint is clear and swirl free, then apply polish/wax. Do you have a buffer like the Porter Cable?

I really love the 105. Its work time is really tempremental with the weather and dusts alot, but it does its job well. On GM's hard clears(vettes and F-cars anyways) and pending on how bad your paint is, I would use a meguires WS-5000 wool pad with the 105 on a F-car. Followed by SIP or 205 with a meguires 2.0 soft buff pad. If your paint is not that bad, you can get away with a foam wool or orange.

Default polishing

I have a porter cable that I used last yr with orange and green pads. So I should apply the 105 with the pads you guys suggested, follow up with the 205 or something like Menzerna SIP, and thin finish up with the Zaino? After the 105 and 205 does the car need to be washed before applying the finishing touches?

With a porter cable, stick with the orange pad with the 105. The wool and foam wool pads are for rotarys. If you use the 205 after, try out a megs 2.0 soft buff pad with it. The 2 are match made in heaven, lol. Other than wiping down with alcohol/water mix before and after using the 105, I dont wash. I move on to polish, then wipe down with Z6 before adding sealant. The 205 doesnt really dust at all.

You can find everything you need from autogeek or detailedimage but you got it and YES wash the car to get all of the compound oils and dust out of the cracks/crevices. Also before starting any polish work, tape up any plastic and rubber trim with blue painters tape so that you don't risk embedding compound into that (it's a bitch to remove).

Just curious is it safe to apply Meguiars M105 or Ultimate Compound using a porter cable over the Firehawk decals? I'd like to know whether it's too abrasive for the decals.

Thanks in advance,

Gary

I would stay away from the Firehawk Decals with any type of Buffer, It is very easy to really mess them up.

Consider doing it by hand or your pad might tear up the vinyl and the 105 will build up in the vinyl seams. So tape up the vinyl to preserve it. Also, you might want to look into the Megs MFDA system which features 2 MF pads (cut/polish) and 2 specially formulated compounds which are very wet and have extremely long "open" times. I ran over vinyl lettering with these on a race car and the compound is very easy to wipe up w/out leaving any residue in the vinyl crevices.

Make sure that when you you remove the tape from your decals, you pull it off at a severe angle, to make sure you don't lift the decal also.

I used it on my car the other day and I liked it. It definitely finishes down pretty good, except for all of the dust. Ive heard they are supposed to reformulating it so it doesnt dust so bad.

I can't think of a situation where I would be happy enough with the way 105 finished down to go straight to an LSP.

Never for me.

It still has the very fine "swirls" and requires an additional polishing step before I even think of going to my LSP.

However, the D300 finishes down so nicely I can go to an LSP about 80% of the time. It's amazing.

Advance Auto Parts sells it around me, you can check them. 105 works well, but I would check out some tips and tricks on autopia first.

M105 Will dust up for many reasons. Sometimes its due to Single Stage or OLD PAINT. It wants to suck up the M105. Also temp and humidity, RPM, pressure, pad, work area will effect this.

Once you get a good pass be it on a Rotary or D/A or Orbital, then follow up with M205, 205 can and should be worked longer and you will get a finer finish.
