Default Anyone with the WW kit driving in hot climates? Hows the overheating?

I figured I should post this here because people with the Wings West Kit would show up here the most.

I want to know if you have the Wings West Kit on your 1998-2002 LS1 Trans Am and if your located in hot climate areas

Number are a little bit inflated just to be on the safe side:

80-115 Degrees F in the summer <img border="0" title="" alt="[Mad]" src="gr_images/icons/mad.gif" />
25-48 Degrees Celcuis in the summer <img border="0" title="" alt="[Mad]" src="gr_images/icons/mad.gif" />

If your driving in that kind of weather with the wingswest kit on are you having overheating problems? how bad is it? Also are you using the the stock air damn deflecter or WW air dam deflector (piece that goes under the car)?

What would you recommend for me to do? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />

Would I need a better radiator? would the stock air damn deflector be fine?

Note that I a daily driver <img border="0" title="" alt="[Razz]" src="gr_images/icons/tongue.gif" /> .

Thanks a lot! Please try to answer quick! I dont have much time! <img border="0" alt="[worship]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_hail.gif" />

I've had no problems with mine. I have the stock air deflector on. the one that comes with the air dam is way too big and hits everything in sight.

thanks for the reply. I believe overheating wont be much of a problem in your location because of the cool climate in Durham,CT. I asked a friend of mine and he said durham's weather is more like canada's weather. Please correct me if im wrong.

Im located at san antonio Texas and it gets hot here in the summer.. just wondering if thats going to be a problem.

<img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" /> anyone else?

I dont have the LS1 but live in VA, gets in the hundreds in the summer, i havent had any problems with over heating while driving above 45mph with the stock air dam. But driving slower the temp would reach 210degrees, i was told it was normal, but bought the manual fan switch anyway, now it is perfect. The airdam ww gave me was huge and looked nasty, also hit everything an inch off the road.

Im guessing when you guys say fan switch you simply mean a switch that will allow the fan to work sooner. But shouldnt the fan kick in anyway when the car starts overheating?

Also since i need a fan switch should I get a 160 thermostat while im at it? or is that a bad idea?

Thanks for the input guys. I really appreciate that.

Get a fan switch and a 160 thermo and you will not have to worry about it. I can let mine idle all day and it will not get much above the first mark on the gauge. Note that 98s gauge read about 20* low and the rest read about 40* high.

Canada's weather. we get consistent 90+ weather with some serious humidity. I was told that I might run thru emission problems (whatever that means)... and I would be better off getting a 160 stat and set my fans at 140?

I dont have a HPP3. Im hoping some guy could do it for me with ATAP?

help me out one more time please <img border="0" alt="[worship]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_hail.gif" /> . I have no idea what he meant by emission problems?

Loosely put...emissions deals with protecting the environment..."problems" with emssions usually have to do with running and ORYP (off road y-pipe...has no catalytic converters)...running a big cam...etc...things that will introduce undesirable or "illegal" amounts of pollutants/gases into the environment...I really don't see how using a fan switch would cause emission problems...but don't worry man...once inspection time comes...I am sure that you will have no problem finding a shop that will "overlook" some emission violations...

Colder operation may mean less complete combustion
and this might elevate your emissions. Most "how
to pass" writeups recommend getting your engine
fully hot. However, you might still pass with a
160-degree 'stat. Don't know until you try.

Whether you will make more power from the higher
advance that lower temps will permit, or from
the higher efficiency you'd get by running a
hotter water jacket, is also something you'll
only know by trying.

I still have the stock 'stat but I set my fans
(with Predator) to come on low at about 10
degrees below setpoint and high at 5 above.
The low fans make sure the radiator is just cool
enough that the 'stat is what sets the block
coolant temp, and the high fans kick on only
when the 'stat can't keep up anymore with the rad
"sink" only 10 degrees below. This means my low
fans run at idle after driving but the high fans
seldom run. My ECT readings are very stable at
194.

If you get a low temp 'stat but don't set your
low speed fans to support it with a temp below
the setpoint, then the 'stat is nothing but a
restrictor most of the time and your operating
temp is set by airflow (all over the place).
You launch from idle, you may be all the way
up to 210F as this is where the stock fan
settings are.
