Fiberglass Hood Dilemma!
Hey Guys,
I have an 02 SS.
I am putting her on a diet and a fiberglass hood is on my list.
I picked up a TruFiber (fiberglass, duh) OEM-style SS hood. I thought it was going to be much lighter but when I weighed it, it is 33 pounds!
I weighed my stock hood... 45 pounds.
So, only 12 pounds lost for >$400, and I haven't even painted it yet!
I would really PREFER to keep the stock-style SS hood look.
Here are my options:
#1 Keep the stock/OEM SS and lose weight elsewhere.
#2 The fiberglass hood has an 'under-component' with functional ram air. If I cut all that out, maybe it could lose another 7-10 pounds?
#3 Bite the bullet and go to a VFN cowl hood (aren't these supposed to weigh less than 20 pounds?) and lose the SS hood look.
I am NOT willing to go with a pin-on hood.
What should I do?
Does anyone know of an aftermarket SS-style hood that weighs 25 pounds or less?
Please help!
Thanks in advance!

Personally if you want the SS look I would do the Trufiber and cut out as stated above. VFN makes some very nice hoods as well it will just be a matter of preference in style. If it's weight your trying to save more than the "look" is what there hoods are more based on I would find another way to save weight. JMO

Good point, but no I haven't test fitted it. As soon as I weighed it, I knew I might be returning it, so I didn't test fit it. I just unwrapped it, weighed it, thats it.
I'm thinking I might just have to lose the SS look for weight savings and go for a VFN or harwood. I found this picture that I like a lot, so maybe I'll go the harwood route!

unless you are going to gut the car to keep weight down i wouldnt even bother, imo if your building a race car i agree every pound counts, but in a street car your not going to notice a hood that weighs 10 pounds or 30,thats just what i think man, now if your going to really get serious about cutting weight bust out the cutting wheel,

my vfn hood was alot lighter than my stock ss hood, but i kick my self in the *** for selling my stocker about once a month, if your trying to get a better time spray it, you can keep your car with everything on it and should be pretty close to that 10 second number, but that will depend on a few things.

are you only going after weight reduction to better your ET? if so, then you may want to reconsider other options since you're willing to spend that amount on a new hood. just some food for thought.
