A relay is basically a switch that is flipped by another electric source (instead of your finger for example). In this case, the original stock wires will be used to flip the relay and new/thicker wires will feed power to the relay and the bulbs.

In the pic, the 12V trigger connects to the stock wires that went to the bulbs. The 12V output goes to the bulbs (or the HID kit as the case will be). The 12V Source connects to the 12V AUX terminal by the fuse box. The Ground connects to an existing Ground screw near there.

When I built my harness, I used a separate relay and fuse for each headlight. Cheaper harnesses only use 1 relay and fuse for both headlights. I don't like that because if the relay or fuse fails, both headlights go out. In my setup, only 1 headlight will go out; the other will remain working so you can see where you are going.
Those look like Sonar projectors.
