Question Intake Manifold Painting

Does anybody have any tips for painting the intake? I've seen pics, but would like to know of any problems I might run into. The intake is going to be removed, fuel rails removed, etc. I plan on sanding the intake smooth. Should I use some high temp primer? I am also replacing gaskets when I am putting it back on. Any other hints anybody can think off?

If you did a search in this forum, you would get alot of posts of people that have painted their intake and what paint's they used. I think there is even a step-by-step process of taking your intake off, that was posted by someone.
Here is an example: https://ls1tech.com/forums/appearance-detailing/145621-finally-got-my-intake-painted-pics.html
This link will give you an idea on how to take the intake off: http://ls1howto.com/index.php?article=5

Good luck,
Jeremy

Yeah, I have no problems removing it because the radiator, water pump, timing chain cover, etc. are already out of the car. The main thing I was wondering is if people cover up the holes for the fuel injectors or the screw holes? I plan on sanding down some imperfections, then cleaning it, and painting and clearing it. I did my brake calipers the same way and had no problems.

I'll post pics as soon as I get done. BTW, it's going to be silver with Chevy red-orange fuel rails.

Definitely mask off the inj & bolt holes. Along with the sensor & vacuum lines. I replaced my gaskets (came with the LSX). If you're using the same intake, they might be OK. If they are flat, I'd replace them. As for sanding, it helps, but a couple clear coats will smooth it out quite a bit. I stopped at 2 coats on mine....I think 3 would have made it smooth, and I did not sand it.

I used some 1/4" wire loom covering for spacers on the rear bolts to hold them up. It's the right size & it's easy to slide onto the bolts.

I bought some cork and rubber stoppers from Home Depot to plug all the injector and other larger holes.. i left some extra bolts part way in the bolt holes to plug them..

Sand off the casting marks using a small hand sander.. then mask, prime, paint, paint, clear, clear, clear

Paint work is 90% prep so make sure the part is grease free (clean with solvent)..

yeah, it's not that bad at all...I sanded all the cirlcles on the ribs (twice since I painted my buddies for him) but did not use anything to fill them back in. I would suggest a "filler" primer...not sure if it works any better, but it is supposed to. Then the obvious multiple "thin" coats...thin thin thin!

Thanks for all the reply's. I took the intake off last night and can't figure out how to remove the line from the evaporation canister that goes into the side of the intake (behind the TB) and the MAP sensor mount . Can anybody provide any guidance?

Are you talking about the tube on the driver's side with the plastic retainer clip? Just push the clip in on the "solid" side, and the 3 piece side slides out & it pops off. All the other hoses just pull off. The fat one on the pass side might need convincing. But if you rotate it, or pry on the end with a screwdriver to break it loose, it should pull off.

Yeah, I was talking about the one on the driver's side. I will see what I can do with that retaining clip. What about the pieced on the back that the MAP sensor mounts to and vacuum lines go to. I didn't want to do much 'convincing' with that because I did not want to break it.
