I've painted slightly rusty metal, and bare metal with that stuff and it works great. Whats really nice is you can apply it with a brush (those foam sponge type brushes work better) and when it dries it shows no brush marks and is very shiny. I painted my 12-bolt rearend, my hood hinges, door hinges, firewall, and crank pulley for the '69 with gloss black POR15. A little goes a very long way.

Yea I've been debating about doing things gloss black or semi gloss? I'm thinking semi-gloss would be better for the undercarrage/suspension.

I put silver POR 15 under the hood when I did the WIRE mod. I welded the holes up that were left over the applied the POR15 on bare metal after prepping. Very Glossy. Looks ok to me. I will be painting the engine bay black when I pull the motor and get the paint done so it's not imperative it look perfect at this point.

The stuff sucks to work with in my opinion. It was cold and dry out so it took forever to set-up so I got alot of dust particles in it. It adhered just fined to prepped bare metal. I used 80grit discs on my pneumatic grinder to remove the paint.

BTW: Eastwood (a sponsor) sells a rust inhibiting paint that is a direct competitor to POR15. Some magazine articles I have read (one of them is available on Eastwoods site) rated it as better than POR15.

Probably can't be applied over oil, though, right?

Just use some brake-cleaner & mineral spirits- that'll clean that oil right off...

I love POR-15...my friend used it on the entire underside & firewall of his '78 Z28 restoration- looks amazing and it is NOT coming off...ever.

While it doesn't "require" very much prep the manufacturer *strongly* recommends using their their marine clean and metal-ready before applying the product.

These products are included in their kits.Which is what I used.

youre right you should use the cleaning products that they include but you dont have to sand the surface.

Yeah...sorry- I meant you use the brake cleaner & mineral spirits to remove the oil...

Not as a prep for the POR-15. Just use whatever is in the kit for that once everything is generally clean.
