Default g-body headlight upgrade

I hate sealed beam units, they are too dim for my liking... So I want to convert to headlights, but so far all i've found are the lauren engineering $1000+ nose conversions that look nice, but not at $1479.95 before shipping it freight to my door. Something inside me wants to say $2000 all said and done.

I have a G-body too. Have you tried to use the sealed beam conversion housings? You use a bulb in the back of the head light (much more bulb options) and the housings are empty otherwise. They are about $20-$40 a pair plus bulbs...a lot cheaper than that cho-cho customs front end.
You could even install an HID kit with projectors in them (lots of custom work though).

78_elky, did you post on HID planet about a HID projector conversion?

trevmust, 78_elky is right. You can get conversion housings and use newer halogen bulbs, or you can install HID projectors (although that is more work as noted, but you'll get much better output).

they had composite buckets on their page. where did you get your kit? I dont mind about the work, it'll be worth it.

I'm kinda annoyed, no one wants to share how they got headlight upgrades as if its a contest. :/

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/6-X4-H4-SEALE...ht_4295wt_1271 any good?

If they stop working at least I have a housing and can get a high quality H.I.D. kit

Oooo found.a.better.kit. Are all h6054 bulbs the same.size? Are elkie.lights 6x7"? Ebay says 4x6, but.oe says 6x7.

My firebird supposedly uses the same headlights, so ill measure them and find out!

Don't get the cheap ebay housings with an HID kit. The beam pattern won't be great (some are bad -- especially those "bi-xenon" ones since the HID arc won't be in the correct place for those Halogen housings).

However, if you get some cheap housings, you can put projectors in them if you are up for come customization. Check out HID planet for more info. There are a few trucks on there with 7x6 housings and projectors in them.

Alternatively, if they are the same headlights as a 1993-1997 Firebird (or at least close in size), you can get the BLS kit which has FX-R bi-xenon HID projectors.

Which year and model g-body do you have? Different years used different headlights. If I remember correctly, some years used a single 7x6 for high/low while later years used two separate 4x6 for high/low.

What model g-body? Malibu, El Camino,...? did they all use the same headlights?

Looking at Sylvania's site,
The 1980 Malibu, 1980 El Camino, and 1986 Firebird use the same H6054 hi/lo headlight
The 1993-1997 Firebird uses a H4666 hi/lo headlight.

The H6054 is physically larger than the H4666.

H6054 ..... 142mm X 200mm .... 5.6in X 7.9in
H4666 ..... 100mm X 165mm .... 3.9in X 6.5in

It can't be 8 in wide.... Damn... :/

Measured.... And it.is.6x8. Gotta double.check.the housing on summit now

http://m.summitracing.com/parts/hla-003427291

So.it says its 7 inches.wide, but.then goes.to.say.its a 200mm housing which is 7.874 inches....

I bet it depends on where you measure it (outer lip versus front glass).

Either way, are you going to stay halogen or are you looking for HID? None of those hi/lo combo housings would be good for HID. None of the H4 HID kits have particularly good results.

Here are some examples of a projector inside a 7x6 housing.

Basically get a cheap set of housings with clear front glass (no fresnel) and cut them up to install projectors.

If you really want the best output also get or make a relay harness and use higher output bulbs.

Makes what? A completely new wire harness? That isn't what I'm talking about. I'm talking about a relay harness that accepts input from the stock wiring as a trigger and gets power directly from the batter to supply the headlights using thicker gauge.

Here is a pic of the relay wiring harness I made for my car:

https://ls1tech.com/forums/appearanc...enty-pics.html

If Painless makes something like that, please post a link, image, or part number.

they make a direct from battery relay harness

which if i can read properly completely replaces the need for the old headlight wiring harness.

The relay still needs to be triggered by the stock headlight wire harness.

That one is way too expensive. I'd say either build it yourself or get a relay harness made for HID kits (you might have to change the 9005/9006 connector it comes with to be the correct connector if that is how that particular harness comes). If you tell The Retrofit Source exactly what you need, they may make it for you and it will still be much cheaper than that Painless Wiring version.
