I know there out there its just a matter of locating them. The caps come right off with one screw. Interchangable through all the wheels. may be a good piece to find in the junk yard on like a g6 or cobalt. Id tell you how he did mine but the honest truth is im not sure. He never showed me, just did it. Im assuming he backfilled it with some sort of plastic or epoxy then used filler to make it flush. I know on ebay you can find some expensive ones that are real carbon fiber that dont have button holes but there stupid prices.

that being said i wouldnt buy a wheel based on that cause usually only the cheap wheels had no controls. Id buy the wheel you want then find the caps. I believe the correct name for them as far as gm is concerned are the spoke covers

My buddy at GM said I could get it for 155$ at the dealership, but that might be his price.

great write up! I am working on one for a 2000 gmc jimmy with an ls swap. The airbag will not match up. I aquired a 2009 vette column with wheel and blown airbag for $40, wont happen again. I also bought another 2000 s10 airbag off ebay and going to attempt to pack the bag and igniter from the s10 unit in to the vette unit. I might have to have the retaining piece machined to fit the igniter. I know its not legit to tamper with an airbag but id rather have it then not. I used some of your infor here in my thread but gave you credit!

Ill keep you updated to the airbag. Here is my link.

The wheel in my '99 has gotten awful looking and is really ruining the look of my interior. I'm gonna go to a couple local yards around here tomorrow and look for one of these wheels. My high beams have been acting up so I guess I'll try to fix them too. Is the white unit on top the the column in this pic the high beam switch?

I just took the GM part # for the upper steering shaft and came up with a lot of different models its listed for. One of the most common I'm seeing is the Express and Savana work vans. Do you think these would have the correct shaft? If so I know where quite a few of those are.

The white thing is actually the ignition module

Yep as stated above as long as its a tilt column it should be the right part. Stay away from cobalts and stuff like that because they utilize a straght shaft and a drop column.

Default more airbag info

I took apart an 2000 s10 airbag to see if could be retro fitted to the vette wheel and its too big. Here is some more information I posted this morning on my thread. The 2500hd unit is smaller and might actually work.

more info, more info

the s10 bag, WAY too big. I did learn this morning that the 2500hd trucks kept the single stage bag units even now. Also looked up the diagrams and it sure is. I have a post over a performancetrucks.net to see if someone will takes some measurements before I spend more money to take something apart.

Below are pics of the 2500hd airbag diagrams showing only one stage (marked as HVY) and random shots of the s10 and vette parts side by side.

last pic is a 2500HD unit from the back, 2006.

I've been researching the part # for the upper steering shaft and I think I'm going to go to the pick and pull yard near me and get a whole column out of a Grand Prix, should only set me back $40 for the whole column. The yard I got the steering wheel from has a bowtie airbag I can get for $100.

I've seen everyone talking about the airbag issue. Has anyone looked into radio/steering wheel controls? I know it's a small issue but I enjoy my steering wheel controls. In want to do this mod.

Thanks for all the info and pictures guys!

I've thought about this. I think what you'd want to do is harvest the button modules from the old steering wheel and keep the circuit board. Then you'd have to wire the new switches in place of the old switches one-by-one. This way the correct signal will be sent and you can pair any switch with any function (seeing as many of the newer wheels have buttons for phone, cruise control, and others not supported by our 8 radio switches). While the wiring might be a bit tedious, I think the hardest part would be finding a place to house the switch circuit boards within the new wheel.
