Solutions for destroyed dash
i fixed my 2nd dash pad. i could now do it in no time lol i wraped mine in leather. however if yours is really beyond fixing maybe just get the cover and use the parts where it attaches like you mentioned , am not very sure if it will sit flush with the edges though. pics would be helpful
I just dread seeing these posts knowing that someday this may happen to me. My dashes are still perfect and do see some occasional high temps on sunny days. I just wish someone had a good idea on how to keep em that way besides just hiding the cars in the garage.... 
My old 98 never saw a garage and its dash pad was perfect. I even pulled it a couple times without issue.
My 99 hasn't been garaged since I got it (changing that in November) and it is still OK. I haven't tried pulling it out yet as that will wait until I do my dash swap/wrap in a few years.
I think some just break and others are fine, and it is luck of the draw whether or not it will break.

Yeah if it's really bad like that then it will be pretty difficult to repair it. I did mine however and it came out really good.
I used plastic welding expoxy to piece it back together. It was still jagged and uneven though so I decided to use body filler, bondo, and it worked amazing! Could never tell it's been repaired. I added many patches of cardboard underneath for support. Then I wrapped it in vinyl that matched the grain of the dash. Bought the vinyl from Hobby Lobby. It's a project for sure, but it's so worth it. Who wants to see some crappy looking broken dash pad every time they drive? Good luck.
