depends what "regular wood" you are speaking of. If comparing it to say plywood, then HELL YES, it is much easier to sand and can be "shaped" (sanding to create a form) better then plywood ever would. The only comment on MDF is to "seal" it with a coat of fiberglass resin if it would be placed in a position to get wet.

Ideally for something like this I would try to get my hands on a solid piece (13"x8"x2" just a bit oversized) of like white pine or douglas fir or oak and then shape it with a sander and stain it, but the MDF would be a cheaper "trial run" for a proof of concept.

you could even add a magnetic latch where the old one was to hold it shut.

Doesn't look bad. However I'd only do it if mine was damaged and that was my only option.

I like the attempt and it is a good temporary fix, however this is one of those items where I just suck it up and pay for OEM or similar replacement. It sucks that they're expensive and are still poorly made, however I don't see how I could make anything that looks half as good as the stock piece.

The factory lids SUCK, they're expensive and not designed to have any weight applied on them, so they don't last. I've bought 2 replacement lids over the years and finally made one with 1/2" oak plywood, with 3/4" of closed cell foam rubber glued to it and covered it with speaker box carpet.

I don't think it looks as smooth from the top as countryguy1717 lid does but it looks better on the bottom, I also re-used the factory lid hinge. Mine was originally only going to be a temporary, but has remained on my console for several years now. Hell... if I could find someone to build a sturdy and nice looking one for $200 or less I would of bought one by now, but that hasn't be the case.
Anyway, my hat goes off to you countryguy1717 for posting up your functional lid, because I knew you would get flamed.

Just saw this thread because my 2000 Z28 is missing the console lid and i was looking for replacement. I haven't found one for less than 150.00, personally i am not paying that price for such a shitty designed part. After seeing the DIY lid on here I am going to fab one out of 1/8 aluminum plate, foam rubber and buy the cover for 30.00 bucks, i will have a part that will last glad i kept the original hinge and latch.

Here is the one I made:

Florida Aire was making some custom center console lids, but I don't know if they are still doing it or if they are still a sponsor. Either way, here is a thread where someone installed one of theirs:
