Best glass cleaner for windshield I have these weird patches on my windshield, which are very noticeable when it rains. Like the arch of travel from the wiper and just weird blotchy spots here and there. You can't even see it, when the windshield is dry, but it's VERY noticeable when raining; almost to the point of impairment.
I read that acetone or mineral spirits can be used, but I'm worried about messing up my paint.

I see what you are describing often. Contaminants just built up over time and glass cleaner will more often then not be unable to remove it.
The best way would be to do a machine polish with a da polisher, foam cutting pad and a cutting compound. The windshield clarity will be night and day using a automotive abrasive compound to remove years of build up on the windshield.

For decades on end I have used regular rubbing alcohol of 70% or higher. Fully wet a small cloth and rub the entire glass surface hard. No need to get the cloth dripping wet but enough to fully wet the cloth. Then use water and a microfiber cloth to make the glass 'like new' again. You may have to do it twice. I have used Rain-X afterwards on occasion when I go on long trips. That helps prevent build-up of crud again. Change or fully clean the wipers often too so you don't spread the problem all over again. It really can build up on the blades.

Zaino makes a glass polish (Z-12) that has worked wonders on such problems, in my experience. It has a similar consistency as toothpaste. I just use it by hand with a terry pad, but for really bad areas I'm sure you'd get quicker results with a power appliance.
For a maintenance (and interior) glass cleaner, I only use Dirtex (by Savogran). This contains ammonia, so I wouldn't use it on tinting paper.
