Default Moss ZL1 hood q...

A saler named "DG Motorsports" has an ebay sale going right now where they claim...

"We built the original John Moss ZL-1 Big Block Hood."

If this is true, then how come all the posts I found here at LS1Tech using the search (and there were a ton) say that the DG hood is close, but still does not have the same look? If they made the "real" one, then wouldn't they be able to copy it exactly since so many people want it?

I'm not sure if it's ok to post a link to the Ebay sale, so I won't do that, PM or email if you want it.

Thanks.

Well, if DGM hasn't changed their design, it's really nothing like the John Moss hood when compared size by side. As for making the Moss hood, I remember reading that is was a one off from GM (basicly a custom scoop on an LT1 hood), but it could have been contracted to DGM.

The Moss hood was made at Wheel to Wheel. The first one was too tall but looked cool. We could not see right hand turns apex so the hood was lowered to what you see today. It was a one off piece made for that car.

I read all that also (been doing some research on the ZL1) but didn't know if what this ad claimed was true or not. If so then I was going to have to look more closely at getting one from them.

don't tell me that there is no one with that user name once you click that link.

Kurt, thanks for answering that question, that's some mighty intresting info about the famed car.

I wish someone would make that same huge hood.

I wish Jon would come back out of retirement so I could drive it again. We had the car here for our openhouse. Just driving into the building brought back some great memory's.

Yeah, I remember watching that show where he was beating on Coletti's '96 Boss. Looked like a fun car.

Kurt, why was the hood based on the LT1 hood and not the LS1 hood?. Was the nose change last minute?

I've been thinking about doing a ZL1 tribute, and try to capture the essence of Moss' ZL1. That's why I was intrested in this add. You are one hell of a lucky man to have even seen the car first hand Kurt. A guy like me here in Texas, can only dream about seeing that very car unless I drive to some car show 1,000 miles from here.

The car was built in 95 or 96 when the LT1 cars were out. That car started life as Jon Moss company car. We updated the front end in 99 I think, keeping the original scoop and just reshaping the front to fit.

Didn't know that it was his company car. That's kind of funny really. If I do decide to go that route, then I might try and do something that he would like to have as a daily driver, but would still take to the track to face off with Collatti (I can't spell his name, sorry).

I didn't realize that the car had been built that long ago. I imagine you guys flared those rear fenders too? That car is still one of the sweetest looking Camaros out there.

If you search hard enough on the internet, then you can find the pics of it before it had that carb setup, and was still a big Donovan. It was featured in a mag with 2 chevys in an article called "EarthMovers" or something cheezy like that. I have that mag somewhere (hopeing I didn't toss it), where it still has the LT1 front end on it.

Here is the lead page of that story from the mag, which also happen to be the cover story...

Thats when the ZL1 still had the dual throttlebody intake on it. I took Jeff Koch for some 1/4 passes at Memphis the day that was taken. Those were some great days.

The wheel wells are stretched to fit taller tires.
The original aluminum block is still in it, I put Dart heads and a single 4 barrel intake on it with a FAST controller. At that time we also replaced the Tremec with a G-force 5 speed.

You should write a book on that car Kurt, that is the one car I am most fasinated with. The story of Daddy Moss' ZL1.
