If your not skeered to disassemble the upper portion the steering column , the new shaft installs in the f-body column just like old one . So Yes it is possible to use a 3 spoke wheel or c5 wheel . You wont however get the 3 spoke radio controls to work . They dont do as much as old ones did because GM bundled in the info center controls in the newer cars , so they only allow for volume up/down , seek up/down and 1 or 2 other things . The voltage outputs are different as well .
Hey just noticed this, so an Impala or Monte Carlo steering wheel would work for us Camaro guy's.

bump for a g6 or solstice wheel for a T/A as well. I would probably buy one depending on price.

Yep ....the 2000-2002 Camaro wheel and airbag came directly out of the 95-99 Monte Carlo /Lumina .

Just FYI on fabbing a plug n play airbag . I would seriously avoid that . If someone got into an accident and it didnt go off , you are open game for all kinds of lawsuits because its against the law to modify an airbag in any way shape or form and all the disclaimers in the world would not protect you .

Plus with GM's newer style can bus electronics , I doubt a straight voltage signal like the F-bodies had would even fire it . Almost everything in the new GM cars are a pulsed signal . And the bags in question are multi stage , meaning different signals fire the bag at different blow rates .

You need the shaft in the second link. For anyone considering doing this here is a useful link on rebuilding a GM steering column.

Typical GM column. Ours are similar except with the airbag. I took my time and did it in 3 hours including removing and installing the column in the car.

Exclamation

Steering wheel, airbag and the shaft is all you need. Basic tools, and a few specialty tools which are readily available at a parts store. Yeah, it took me 3 hours, but i removed the entire steering column from the car to do it. Didnt look like it was possible to do in the car. Hardest part for me was getting the high beam switch rod to stay in place while installing the lower steering column housing. Also have to modify the horn wiring and do some minor drilling on the new steering wheel. It sounds more complicated than it really is. The link I gave will be your friend

Basically I used it for visual references. Once I got the original wheel, airbag and clockspring off I started my teardown on page 59 of the article and work up to page 19. Then followed it in the correct order to put it back together. Disregard pages 39-41. The wiper switch can stay in the housing.
