The contaminants stick in the clay. Rolling the clay over to a new surface periodically keeps the gunk from scratching the paint. Fluid should also be used to lubricate during the process, not just rubbing the dry claybar on a dry car - detailing claybars (shouldn't just use J. Random Clay from the crafts section at Wal-Mart ) are often sold in a package with a bottle of it.

I use a car duster before I park the car. Only after it has been washed, and if there is a light dusting. I wouldnt dust it if I ran through a mud bog. That seems to help.
