Default Camaro Ramair Hood Functionality?

Hey all, I was just wondering under what situation a ram air hood would actually serve a purpose on a camaro. The TA's have their ramair located right at the front thanks to the badass design, but the more subtle camaro design lands the vent towards the mid-rear of the hood, like this one: http://fasttoys.net/shop/product_inf...products_id=57
I love the way the hood looks, but i dont want it to be pointless...unless it still serves a purpose that i'm not thinking of, like cooling or something.

thanx

The camaro SS hood does serve a purpose, just like the hood on the WS6. The air that enters the scoop is redirected via built in canals under the hood, and sent right into your airbox. If your putting this on a V6 though, i think it will be a little harder to make that functional, since the V6 airbox is in a different location i believe.

On my 02 ss hood the air is routed back to the front of the engine and comes out into the airbox. See the link below too.

Oh, I had no idea they had canals in the underside, interesting. And it would be going on my Z28, so no V6 inside there, lol. But after reading that link, I guess that I'm not gonna waste my money on it. heh.
Thanx for the quick replies

As an SS owner, I'll be the first to tell you the hood is essentially nothing more than a nice looking hood. It does grab some air and toss it towards the air box, but I'd hardly call it "ram air" or even "effective" for that matter.

And that article at the link listed above actually says that the heated hood (either by sun or engine) actually heats the air coming in, which isnt a good thing.

I don't know about that. The hoods are composite and don't get hot at all. As far as ram air functionality, I don't think the SS or WS6 make any significant hp gains from their respective hoods. You would think that underhood temps would remain a bit lower though.

If you read closely it says that it heats the air only at idle. Once the car gets going the temperature drops since the hood can dissapate the heat. So, the hood isnt really functional until you are traveling at significant speeds from what I can gather.

Which would suck for traffic or going to the track up in palmdale during the date time I'm still thinking of getting one.

if you want the SS hood, dont buy it for functionality, buy it for looks. its a great looking hood, but does little to none in the performance category. get the hood and a FTRA kit, and you'll have the best of both. ironically, the FTRA, SSRA, and SLP ram air kits all block the slit under the lid, rendering the "ram air" hood useless. those kits work much better by letting the air come into the bottom of the airbox in a much more direct path.

I should make a cut out that would open the inlet at a certain speed or temperature

How much lighter are they than the steel hood?

I wonder if the LT1 SS hood is better as that has the box in the rear of the scoop. I've already bought an LS1 front bumper for converting though

If You Want To Waste Money On A Hood, Go Get The Ultra Z Hood Since That Is Esentially Better For Air Flow With Less B.s. I Do Agree, The Ss Hood Is Just For Looks

i just recently got that hood, and i love it. first off its like 5 times lighter than the stock hood, and it is a functional hood, however functional ss hood can get.

Best way to get ram air in your SS is to convert to a sealed front breather and attach the lid to the sheetmetal tunnel that feeds the radiator.

The factory SS hood has such a convoluted air path it doesnt to anything to give the motor any real extra air.
