Default Is there an online CF how to?

I am wanting to do the interior pieces of my car in CF. I'd like to do it myself. If there a "how to" online? Is it very difficult, or just time consuming? Thanks everyone!

Come on guys, could someone at least steer me in the right direction- i.e. another forum member who does their own carbon fiber work or maybe a seperate forum all together with members who can do it. I'd like to attempt this, but not blindly! TTT!

Ya no doubt, Chad has a write up in a thread that's pretty good, if you searched you wouldn't need anymore..

Hey ChevyChad I think I actually e-mailed you awhile back about doing some interior work-I'm the guy from Owasso. I'm broke so I'm going to try it myself. I'll shoot you an e-mail if I ruin it...And yeah I should've used the search, I was being lazy.

I don't know how indepth Chad's writeup is, or what parts he's detailing. But Paul Bird on turbomustangs and corral is re-creating every body panel of his SN95 mustang with carbon fiber. The real deal, fiber/nomex/honeycomb or something. His new trunk is something like 3 pounds and the new door skin he made (outer skin only) is 3lbs 5oz (compared to 30lbs). He is releasing a 35 page (.doc) write-up on molds, materials, bagging, etc. He is using kevlar next for the inner doorskin and maybe the fenders (for protection). Here's an example of the roof he made:

My write up details how to overlay CF onto stock parts. There is a WHOLE lot more stuff involved when setting up molds, and making stand alone parts, etc. I am sure 90% of the people in here are just going for the look, and I have offered a very cheap alternative to buying the piece itself made from CF (which noone makes anyways) by doing the overlay yourself. I have a couple molds in the works right now, and it is probably more work than the average joe would want to venture off on his own and DIY. I'll have to check this guys write up out tho. Maybe I can pick up a tip or 2.

edit* I went to the site and couldn't find the write up. Do you have a link to it?

He definately knows his ****. For structural stuff he adds layers and even kevlar for strenth. Bullet-proof inner doors anyone? LOL!

In the thead he's got going he says he made one up and is waiting for Trent (owner of tm.com) to host it I think. His stuff is super lightweight (just 3 layers I think) and then he clear's them with a UV clearcoat to protect them. I think he is actually painting most of the outside pieces though. They are so thin you can see and feel the honeycomb (like a golf-ball) and you saw how light they are. Coolest thing I've seen in an automotive application (DIY-wise). Keep an eye out on that thread and it will get posted shortly.

If I had the time and $ (and enjoyed 1/2" fibers digging under my fingernails) I'd LOVE to make some t-tops and interior panels like his roof (naked, imperfect, real CF, super light, etc.) Just like a console and parts of the dash. That would be SO cool. I'd do a hood too, but paint that.

Personally, I'd be very afraid to get hit in that Mustang... I broke off a piece of the CF after I resined it, and it's VERY sharp... I can't imagine getting hit with a car and having the shards of the CF flying at my body... although maybe that's what the kevlar is for.

It is. This is for AIX and he'll have a cage and all that to anything that may touch the interior will probably not break off (because of the structure behind the parts) and the doors and whatnot will be kevlar for that reason. Firewall and under the hood are still gonna be steel.

Thus far I've done my center console piece as well as the power-window switch trim on the doors... I have a few more ideas, but I can't mention them just yet because it's definitely NOT something you see too often and I don't want people stealing the idea.
