Default How to protect her in the winter...

Ok guys, its starting to cool down a lil bit in the Chicago area which means winter is right around the corner. Unfortunately I will have to drive my baby in the snow and salt and slush etc. this winter. I already picked up a set of winter tires so I'm not too worried about driveability.

I am a little more worried about protecting that paint from all the salt and such on the roads. of course a good coat of wax would help alot, I was thinking about just putting a good synthetic wax on since from what I understand they last longer and protect better than a Carnauba based wax. any suggestions on a synthetic wax? or maybe any other ideas to protect it in the winter ??

Thanks guys

Yes goto Autopia.org and look around there is a ton of info there.

Zanio and Klasse are the to top sealant. and then there are many others but those two will out last everything else

Here's some advice from someone who spent 10 yrs dealing with New England winters
1 Wash it, as often as you can, you may have to go to a car wash, just go to the touchless ones
2 Clean the underside, use an old lawn sprinkler (the oscillating type) and park the car over it turn it on and let it wash the underside (you may have to move the car to get all off the salt crap off
3 Use the Zaino or Klasse, if you get a chance wash it, and reapply around Jan/Feb
The rear 1/4s are metal, so pay attention to the fender lip, use a hose to wash the crud off it
The rest of the car is plastic, so rust won't be as much of a problem on these
Using this technique, I kept my IROC rust free, and it still is rust free, and that's 10 yrs of New England winters,

Winter tires (I used the Blizzaks) and 200 lbs in the t top well, and I never had a problem at all in my 3rd gen (and that's New England winters, and living at the top of a hill)
Put the winter tires on all 4 wheels, get a cheapo set of steelies and slap the snows on them

My car's gone through winter since it was born, so far s ogood. I just wash my car as often as possible and make sure to try best to keep the salt off. Theoretically, salt levels along costal areas are higher than the salt levels your car will experience during a Michigan winter (Y'all know how bad they salt the roads here) but the salt rusts the cars here because it gets on and doesn't get washed off often enough, whereas cars in coastal areas obviously get washed a lot cause they have the nice weather.

I just wash mine as much as I can right after it snows or rains. Get the bottom part of the car real well. I also wax it alot during the winter. Its all in the keep up, if you keep up with keeping it clean then it will look just as good when spring comes as it did the summer before.

If you have the chance to do it, POR-15 would be a good addition to your undercarraige too. I wished I could've done it before the winter came, but won't be able to do it this time.

Btw, nice to see ya on here too Derek, lol.

As for POR-15, it's basically an undercarraige protection paint. You put it on and it protects against rust and such. Supposedly, you can even paint it straight onto the rust and it'll stop it.

I do have some advice for ya... you and I share weather. I live in lincoln ne... after it leaves me it heads for you... my car is 10 years old and has been a nebraska car all it's life.. thats alot of salt. I got the idea when I replaced my carpet and found rust everywhere... Light rust for the most part and heavy in a few others... I sanded those areas out and used some rust converter... then let it set and then covered it with spray on bed liner that I got at walmart.. Its about $5 a can. I covered the interior inside with it and then did the same process to under my car... my car looks brand new underneith... not that thats really a concern however I know i have a barrier between the salt and my car. This doesn't solve the paint problem but it does fix getting underneither your car and washing... i bought a total of 5 cans and only used about 4.5 to do the inside and the whole underneither. I strongly recommend doing this... It goes on great and requires no prep work. I mean don't spray over mudd but as long as it's clean underneithe it will go on great... Stick well and provides me with an undeniable confidence. You can find it over in the spray paint section of the car section in walmart. should be on the lower shelf next to the bondo.

AGAIN I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS!!!!![I][U]

also traction control is probably the greatest things these cars can have for getting around in the snow... I'd swear by it..
