Default Window Etching 101

Window Etching 101
By Goo

Things you will need
1 bottle of Armour etching acid for glass etching or any other brand*
1 roll of clear cover*
1 set of razor blades
A design

* This products can be found at any art supply store

Step by step etching window procedures
1. The first thing needed to etch any window is the design. Anything can be drawn or can be printed out from a computer. I will use this Camaro emblem.

2. Cut out a piece of clear cover big enough for the Camaro design and to not get any acid on the window.
3. Trace your pattern onto the clear side. For purposes on this I am going to draw on the paper side so the drawing will show up better. If you don’t draw on the clear side it won’t stick to the window.

4. Make any changes to the design as you wish. You can etch this design two ways. You can cut out the Camaro by itself or the black area around it to allow the Camaro to show though.

5. Wash your car window with soap and water. Then dry.
6. Separate the paper and wax side by peeling them apart and place the design on window.

7. Carefully use a razor blade to cut out the design. The more time you take here cutting out the design the better the final product will appear. Overlap the outside edges to the stencil with masking tape and paper to protect the surrounding glass from the etching cream.
8. REMEMBER THIS IS PREMANENT AND THERE IS NO GOING BACK AFTER THIS POINT!!! Pour the etching acid over the design and spread it out evenly with any kind of card (ex: credit card, library card, etc.) over the design making sure to not let any glass you want show through. DO NOT get any excess acid on paint or windows.
9. Leave the acid on the design for an hour. After scoop up as much of the acid as you can back into the bottle (it can be reused).
10. Wash your window with warm water and soap again making sure no acid is left on the window. Peel off the clear cover and look at the design.

I do not take any responsibility in the use of this tutorial. Remember if you **** up your window or paint job… It’s your own damn fault!

good write up. IMO though, ur work doesnt look right, the 30th logo is wrong, and looks poorly done, same with the z28 one. looks like u could of done better, but the flags on the truck window look great. keep up the practice

Really interesting mod...I think I'd be way too **** scared to risk screwing up my windshield though. I may try it some day, thanks for the great write up.

Definitely something you want to be careful with. Dont want to accidentally etch too deep and end up with a weakened window.

Personally, I dont like the way your Z28 etching came out. The "28" and the "350 HP LS1" look pretty ragged, it detracts from the whole piece. I would have used actual letter stencils instead of drawing them out by hand. JMO

So how does the 30th logo look wrong? Just asking for you openion on what is wrong with it.
As for everyone not really liking the Z28 etch, it due to the paper cracked while the acid was on window and it messed up the lettering. It will be fixed this summer. Just like a tattoo you cant get it off but you can fix it.

In SC insurance has to pay for glass free of charge. So if you screw it up, oops, it broke!
