Default some progress pics on my projector headlights

Before anyone comments on the high beam issue I have this to say. Florida does not have inspections so I do not have to worry about that. With HID low beams and HID foglights I really will not have to worry about high beams! This is a low budget project and I'm only around 25% done. I still have to work on the alignments/fitments, work on a lens for the housing, paint the housings (although no one will see them I want them to be black, I hate that yellowish color), and so on. I'm also undecided on which temp. hid bulb I am going to go with. I currently have 6000k in my foglights but I might change that to 3000k. Enjoy.

I will have to dig the link up, I sent it to Infinite cuz he's gonna redo his HID setup....if I find it I'll post it here, or PM ya with it. Thanks for the kind words, I myself can't wait for it to be done, and sucking the green outta the wallet, I'm stuck on deciding on a TT setup on top of the 396, or keeping it NA, cuz I need to make up my mind, and get the heads and intake out to Lloyd, and get the custom cam ground while it's out with him...

"yo does anyone know if lexan can hold up to the heat of HIDs or would going with polycarbonate plastic work out better?"

?? Isn't Lexan just a brand name (GE) for polycarbonate?

i have no idea. Progress tho.....
-Waiting on a blade that can cut the lexan so I can make a lens for these.
-I'm going to have to modify the metal "holder" for the light so the projector can fit all the way back.
-Need input on how I should protect the bulb from water if it were to rain!

I'm building some fixed projectors for my TA from scratch so I'll help you if I can.

Lexan is the way to go, they can withstand heat up to 300*F in my own tests. At 350* they started to form small bubbles in the material. They also survived rock blasts (me throwing a big rock at as hard as I could) and can be bent 180* without breaking. Don't use plexiglass, it's brittle and has a much lower melting point.

LEXAN® is a registered trademark for General Electric Company's brand of highly-durable polycarbonate resin thermoplastic intended to replace glass where strength justifies its cost.
Your going to have to completely seal that gap behind the yellow housing to the chrome projector. Your also going to need to build a cylinder shaped light shield between the projector lens and the headlight's chrome reflector so that the light doesn't scatter. You want all the light to go straight through the lens only. That is what will give you the nice sharp cutoff.

The front lexan shield will need to be attached with just the right adhesive as well. Some sealers will outgas when heated and fog everything up.

You can attach a big rubber boot over the bulb ring area to keep water out.

You will also need to add heat vents. There are several different types. If you go to a junkyard and look at newer lights you will see them. And yes, the factory does make sure the whole assembly is sealed completely and then they install their own specific style of vents. Some designs use a rubber tube that is inserted near the top and then turns down to keep water out. Sometimes it is a smooth hollow tube and sometimes it has small zig-zag ridges on the inside to help dust stay out. Sometimes they add a small charcoal filter to also help keep dust out. Since your lights move up and down, I would not use this type.

Some of the newer headlights use a special vent that looks like a circular bandaid about 3/4" in diameter. It is a special breathable material that just sticks over a hole. It repels water and dust. You would need to get this brand new in order to stick over a small hole, but I don't know who sells them.

Some use a vent that looks like a plastic cap about 1/2" in diameter. A hollow plastic tube is inserted into the top and then the cap pops on over it. There is a small gap around the edges that allows air to move past it. This might be your best bet.

A vent near te top is necessary to prevent the hot air from building up and causing damage and to help equalize the air pressure.

I think he meant you can buy conversion housings that hold an H7 or H9 bulb and that you can buy a rebased HID bulb to fit it. It won't be a projector. Also, there IS a projector in a housing already made that he might be thinking of, but I don't think it is made in your size. It may or may not handle the heat of an HID.

Here is a link on tools and materials that you should read.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Oh yea, as great as Lexan is, it WILL scratch easily. You will need to protect it from scratches by applying a protective film over the front. There are 3 main companies that carry them.

Lamin-x
http://www.lamin-x.com/

StonGard
http://66.241.223.236/merchant2/merc...egory_Code=SGL

and X-Pel
http://www.xpel.com/products/default.asp

I would try Laminex first as they have good prices and sell small portions. Consider getting a pair of 5x7 pices for $20. Besides 20mil and 40mil clear, they also have yellow, blue, smoked and charcoal.

If your having trouble finding Lexan, try looking at big hardware stores for it. I got some from Home Depot.

JasonWW, I'm considering doing some HIDs to my projector lights in the future. If I stick an HID setup in an existing projector housing not originally intended for HID will it melt the lense? What if I vent it properly or even overly will it then be ok? Thanks

I have no idea what projector setup you have. What are the details? Where did you get it?

Got it off ebay, it's a 4" projector setup including the halo that surrounds it. Those projector lenses are very thick and I'm thinking if I vent it properly that it should be fine. ??

I really don't know as I haven't seen the ones you are talking about. I would contact the manufacturer of them and ask.

I'm ditching the plastic housing idea and getting custom housings fabricated. To big of a PITA to seal everything up like that. I really wanted to do the plastic housings so there could be a write up for an alternative for HIDs for LT1 guys. My buddy is making the housings, they should be done next week or so, I'll have pics soon.

Silver02TA are you referring to my sig pic?

That's cool. Hopefully some of my info can still help you with the new housings. Definately post some pics. I want to see how you are doing it. Are you still going to make them flip up?
