I use to use DupliColor Clear, ALL auto shops should sell the small rattle cans of it for a few bucks.

I used actual clear coat had some left over from painting my dads truck. I definately reccomend that but I understand not everyone has the equipment for that. Worth it painted and glossed my lid and other engine parts with it too.....Ill try to get up some pics..
